{"id":376920,"date":"2026-04-01T18:46:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-01T18:46:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/376920\/"},"modified":"2026-04-01T18:46:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-01T18:46:11","slug":"independent-filling-stations-suffer-huge-losses-under-soaring-gas-prices-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/376920\/","title":{"rendered":"Independent filling stations suffer \u2018huge\u2019 losses under soaring gas prices \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Some operators of independent filling stations throughout the country have spoken of the losses they are currently experiencing selling petrol and diesel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mary Burke, owner of Morris Oil, outside Cashel in Co <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tipperary\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tipperary\/\">Tipperary<\/a> said they are running a small operation with small tanks and get fuel deliveries three times a week. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Burke said she has never seen fuel price rises so bad \u201cfor as long as I\u2019ve had a filling station\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe often didn\u2019t change the price of petrol and diesel for maybe a month, two months at a time and we\u2019re up and down off the ladder two or three times a week now changing the price,\u201d she said. \u201cAt the moment we\u2019re not making money on petrol and diesel. We\u2019re actually selling it at a loss. I\u2019m relying on someone to come in and buy something very small conveniently to bring up my margin. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201c[For someone] just to come in and buy petrol and diesel, I\u2019m actually suffering a huge loss. If we sold it at what we were being charged, our shop wouldn\u2019t be any way busy. We would be on our knees by now.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Burke added she was covering the costs of six full-time staff members and can\u2019t sustain \u201cselling petrol and diesel at a loss all the time\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Meanwhile, Jonathan Miller, of Jaybees bakery and petrol station, on the Dunmore East Road in Co <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/waterford\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/waterford\/\">Waterford<\/a>, said they did run a loss on fuel at one point and now are \u201cnot making much off it at all; the margins are miniscule\u201d. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Mary Burke's filling station just outside Cashel in Co Tipperary has been forced to sell fuel at a loss as costs have spiralled.
