We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/scott-mills\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Scott Mills<\/a> has issued his first public statement since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/tv\/news\/scott-mills-sacked-bbc-radio-2-latest-updates-b2949717.html\" title=\"Scott Mills sacked latest: BBC Radio 2 DJ breaks silence after being fired over \u2018personal conduct\u2019 accusations\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the BBC announced his sacking <\/a>earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>The BBC revealed it had terminated the BBC Radio 2 presenter\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/tv\/news\/scott-mills-sacked-bbc-timeline-b2950263.html\" title=\"Timeline of events before Scott Mills sacked from BBC Radio 2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">contracts on Friday <\/a>over \u201callegations about his personal conduct\u201d, just days after taking him off air, following new information it received in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, a BBC spokesperson said: \u201cWhile we do not comment on matters relating to individuals, we can confirm Scott Mills is no longer contracted to work with the BBC.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The BBC has confirmed it knew about the police investigation into Mills in 2017, but said it \u201cacted decisively\u201d after receiving \u201cnew information\u201d in the weeks before his sacking.<\/p>\n<p>The Metropolitan Police launched an investigation into the 53-year-old in 2016 over allegations of serious sexual offences involving a teenage boy under 16 between 1997 and 2000.<\/p>\n<p>Mills was questioned under caution by officers in July 2018 and The Sun has reported that Mills denied the claims at the time and informed the BBC.<\/p>\n<p>The newspaper said BBC bosses decided not to take the then-Radio 1 presenter off air at the time and the case was dropped in May 2019 because of lack of evidence. <\/p>\n<p>Hampshire Police said the sexual offences allegations were first reported by a third party in 2016, and that the force logged the details and passed on information to the Met for investigation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/f0db8beaca52f2bcd5fd0d71926aed61Y29udGVudHNlYXJjaGFwaSwxNzc1MTUwMTA5-2.84080341.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"The BBC revealed it had terminated the BBC Radio 2 presenter\u2019s contracts on Friday\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>The BBC revealed it had terminated the BBC Radio 2 presenter\u2019s contracts on Friday (Jonathan Brady\/PA)<\/p>\n<p>The Met, which does not identify people under investigation pre-charge, said it closed its investigation in May 2019 after advice from the Crown Prosecution Service that \u201cthe evidential threshold had not been met to bring charges\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A BBC spokesperson said: \u201cScott Mills had a long career across the BBC, he was hugely popular and we know the news this week has come as a shock and surprise to many.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also recognise there\u2019s been much speculation in the media and online since Monday. We hope people understand that there is a limit to what we can say because we have to be mindful of the rights of those involved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we can confirm is that in recent weeks, we obtained new information relating to Scott and we spoke directly with him. As a result, the BBC acted decisively in line with our culture and values, and terminated his contracts on Friday March 27.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The BBC added: \u201cSeparately, we can confirm the BBC was made aware in 2017 of the existence of an ongoing police investigation, which was subsequently closed in 2019 with no arrest or charge being made.
