{"id":377985,"date":"2026-04-02T08:44:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-02T08:44:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/377985\/"},"modified":"2026-04-02T08:44:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-02T08:44:07","slug":"rte-archives-environment-arklow-lightship-decommissioned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/377985\/","title":{"rendered":"RT\u00c9 Archives | Environment | Arklow Lightship Decommissioned"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"leadin\">The vessel that has acted as a lighthouse off Arklow is replaced by an automated flashing buoy.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\">The departure of the lightship &#8216;Shearwater&#8217; from the Arklow Bank brought an end to 153 years of service by light vessels providing a warning to shipping.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/archives\/2026\/0301\/1558917-buoys-replace-lightships\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LANBY<\/a> (Large Automatic Navigation Buoy) which replaces the lightship has its own generator and radar beacon.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\">Members of the Commissioners of Irish Lights and Arklow Harbour Board, as well as local dignitaries were brought out to the lightship on a tender for the event. They watched as a line was placed on the &#8216;Shearwater&#8217; for the tow to D\u00fan Laoghaire.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\">An RT\u00c9 News report broadcast on 2 April 1976.
