Steven Gerrard has opened up on an \u201cemotional\u201d exchange with Liverpool hero Mohamed Salah following the forward\u2019s public spat with Arne Slot in December.<\/p>\n

Salah<\/a> had been left out of the Liverpool lineup for consecutive games before claiming he had been \u201cthrown under the bus\u201d by the club and had \u201cno relationship\u201d with manager Slot.<\/p>\n

The Egyptian was then left out of Liverpool\u2019s Champions League squad for their victory over Inter Milan before being welcomed back into the fold following his return from the Africa Cup of Nations.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast<\/a>, Gerrard revealed he sent a message to Salah in the immediate aftermath of his comments and urged him not to leave the club \u201cunder a cloud\u201d.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the Overlap, Gerrard explained: \u201cI spoke to him around that interview at the time. I said, \u2018Don\u2019t do what you\u2019ve done and go under a cloud\u2019 \u2014 yeah, I spoke to him direct.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe texts me every now and again or I text him now and again, more if I am going somewhere with Leo (Gerrard\u2019s son) just so Leo can see him.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it gave me the opportunity to say to him, \u2018You\u2019ve been here for eight or nine years. You\u2019ve been a king here; you\u2019ve got this legacy. Go on your terms, the right way.’\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked how Salah responded, Gerrard revealed: \u201cHe was still a little emotional at the time from the incidents.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was a sub. He was in and out of the team at the time. He was upset. I thought it would have been a shame if he left in January, and he just left.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gerrard also reflected on his own rift with former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers during his time at the club.<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cI understand both sides of it now, I have been a manager myself, I understand both sides. I had a similar thing with Brendan (Rodgers).<\/p>\n

\u201cBut when I look back at it now, and I am out of the game and on the other side of it and less emotional, you understand it from where Brendan is. I maybe wasn\u2019t the same player at 34.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no rule where you have to play every minute because you\u2019re the captain, but at the time, it\u2019s not easy.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you\u2019re in the squad, and you\u2019re about to play (Manchester) United, and you look at the squad, and you think, \u2018I am as good if not better than those players.\u2019 It\u2019s difficult in the player\u2019s situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Salah looks set to leave in the right way at the end of this season after he and the club agreed to part ways with a year left to run on his contract.<\/p>\n
