This will match its spend over the past three years, as the bank continues to improve efficiency and gradually reduce staff numbers, according to its chief executive. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Myles O\u2019Grady, who has led the bank since late 2022, said in an interview with The Irish Times that money had been invested in recent years in areas such as modernising the bank\u2019s core platforms, cyber and fraud protection, building a new business lending platform, and introducing some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/artificial-intelligence\/\">artificial intelligence<\/a> (AI) functions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In the past year, the group has also rolled out a Single Euro Payments Area (Sepa) instant payments system to comply with mandatory EU requirements and come together with the other Irish banks to roll out a new peer-to-peer payments app, called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/your-money\/2026\/03\/13\/can-you-zippay-me-a-fiver-banks-enter-a-new-world-with-a-new-word\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/your-money\/2026\/03\/13\/can-you-zippay-me-a-fiver-banks-enter-a-new-world-with-a-new-word\/\">Zippay<\/a>, to take on the likes of neobank <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/revolut\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/revolut\/\">Revolut<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Bank of Ireland has also invested in developing a new mobile phone app, which is being tested with \u201cfriends and family\u201d and is on course to be launched by the end of June, according to O\u2019Grady. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cOver the last three years, we spent in the region of \u20ac1.6 billion. The strong performance [by the bank] allowed us to invest to grow our business, return capital back to shareholders, but also allowed us to invest in our technology capability,\u201d he said. \u201cWe will spend about the same over the next three years.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">O\u2019Grady said the new app will be more \u201cuser friendly\u201d, \u201cengaging\u201d and \u201cfaster\u201d than the current one. The bank will be able to carry out software updates and upgrades more quickly in future on the app, he added. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Rival <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aib\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aib\/\">AIB<\/a> is planning to launch what it calls a \u201cnew, next generation\u201d app for customers in the second half of this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Bank of Ireland\u2019s investment over the next three years is aimed at projects such as enabling automated mortgage loan decisions, developing new digital platforms for the bank\u2019s wealth, commercial and UK businesses, and continuing investment in AI and fraud and cyber protection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The chief executive signalled early last month that about 20 per cent of the bank\u2019s targeted \u20ac250 million of cost savings over the next three years \u2013 to keep running expenses flat at \u20ac2.2 billion against the backdrop of general inflation \u2013 will come from the greater use of AI by the business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/03\/03\/bank-of-ireland-ceo-bats-away-ai-revenue-fears-amid-focus-on-costs\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI a double-edged sword for Bank of Ireland: good for trimming costs, bad for revenuesOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The bank\u2019s objective is to lower its cost-to-income ratio to the \u201cmid-40s\u201d per cent by 2028 from 49 per cent last year \u2013 as operating expenses remain stable and income continues to grow, thanks to rising customer deposits, loans and assets under management in its Davy and New Ireland businesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">AI automation has reduced customer transfers in call centres and also helped stop \u20ac9.7 million worth of fraud across about 1 billion card transactions last year, according to the bank.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAI presents both opportunities and risks.
