Shock may be an understatement to describe what Southern California drivers feel these days when they have to cough up nearly $100 or more for a full tank of gas.<\/p>\n

As of Friday, the average price of a gallon of self-serve regular\u00a0gasoline in Los Angeles County was $6.002 while it’s\u00a0$5.926 in Orange County. <\/p>\n

But $6 a gallon may not seem much compared to what people driving through Big Sur have to pay: Gorda-by-the-Sea\u00a0Mini Mart along the Big Sur coast is selling premium gas for $10 per gallon.<\/p>\n

Technically, it’s $9.99, but the owner of the gas station\/mini mart doesn’t have much choice as the price display only allowed three digits. <\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s insane. I just saw it right now, and I couldn\u2019t believe it. It\u2019s not something I\u2019m used to,\u201d Gustavo Fraga, traveling north from Los Angeles, told our affiliate KSBW<\/a>. \u201cOver there in LA, we\u2019re at about, like, $6 max, which is something that hits everyone like crazy. But here it\u2019s $10. I\u2019ve never seen that, ever.”<\/p>\n

The Gorda-by-the-Sea\u00a0gas station often has the highest gas price in the country, but the owner, Leo Flores, said he needs to charge more because it costs more to run a gas station on the coastline.<\/p>\n

“We run the place on generators. We don’t have power,” Flores said. “We create our own power here.”<\/p>\n

Another reason for the high prices is transportation: Flores said he has to haul gas from Fresno, over $100 miles away. <\/p>\n

Despite the jaw-dropping prices, drivers often have no choice: whether they are driving toward Los Angeles or San Francisco, when you need gas, your choices are limited.<\/p>\n
