In the space of 10 years, Cork provided Limerick with four senior hurling managers (Dave Keane, Justin McCarthy, Donal O’Grady and John Allen).

Limerick haven’t had cause to look beyond their own borders since 2014, only to take back from Cork what they can claim to be theirs (more anon).

But demographics and geography will always mean the connections will be closer than close. Sunday’s Division 1 final is tangled up in all sorts of knots between the pair:

‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’

Darragh O’Donovan’s long-term girlfriend is Cork camogie star Ashling Thompson. Both are currently sidelined with shoulder and elbow injuries respectively. Cork defender Seán O’Donoghue’s partner Aoife Daly hails from Kilmallock and is the sister of former Limerick U20 hurler Brian.

‘It’s A Family Affair’

Since he hails from the Creggane area on the Limerick border, it’s probably no surprise Cork captain Darragh Fitzgibbon has family from the county. What’s more, he would have faced his cousin Richie a few times before the Doon man retired from inter-county hurling at the start of 2025. Fitzgibbon’s father Mossy, the brother of English’s mother Marion, played intermediate hurling for Cork while Fitzgibbon’s mother Ita was a camogie player for Limerick. Barry Nash is of course a first cousin of former Cork goalkeeper Anthony.

‘Drive My Car’

The Cavanagh’s car dealership in Charleville supplies sponsored cars to players in both camps. Fitzgibbon and Aaron Gillane are brand ambassadors. Fitzgibbon drives a Ford, while Aaron Gillane is behind the wheel of a BYD. Newtownshandrum’s Cormac O’Brien also represents Cavanagh’s, who have previously provided the Limerick kit van too. Keary’s are the suppliers of those vehicles for Cork as they are to O’Donoghue and Tim O’Mahony and in Limerick Barry Nash.

‘Knowing Me, Knowing You’

Limerick’s head of analysis Seánie O’Donnell has been a member of John Kiely’s brains trust since the end of 2017. Before that, Kiely’s fellow Garryspillane man spent seven seasons with Cork under three managers – Denis Walsh, Jimmy Barry-Murphy and Kieran Kingston. O’Donnell’s CV extends to club where he has had success with the likes of Ballygunner, Kanturk and Monaleen. “I’ve often said this to people I knew nothing about hurling until I met him,” said former Monaleen manager Eoin Brislane about O’Donnell.

‘School Days Over’

David Reidy and Paddy O’Donovan are on opposite sides on Sunday but were part of the same Charleville CBS team in 2019. Fitzgibbon and Tim O’Mahony were among the school’s 2014 Harty Cup runners-up that also featured former Limerick squad members Micheál Houlihan and Paddy O’Loughlin. Limerick’s David Reidy starred in Charleville’s Harty Cup team three years earlier.

‘Girls & Boys’

Kiely’s selector Liam Cronin (Cappamore), who joined the set-up last season, was coach of the Cork camogie side when they lifted an All-Ireland senior title in 2024. Cork selector and Ben O’Connor’s Newtownshandrum club-mate William Biggane guided Castletown-Ballyagran to a Limerick junior A title last year.

‘Both Sides Now’

Adrian O’Brien, Limerick’s strength and conditioning coach and father of Shane, prepared St Finbarrs when they won a premier senior county title in 2022. Current Cork panellists William Buckley, Damien Cahalane, Ben Cunningham, Brian Hayes and Ethan Twomey were all part of that group.

‘Alma Matters’

Kanturk and Cork panellist Brian O’Sullivan was team-mates with Limerick’s Adam English, Aidan O’Connor and Colin Coughlan when UL claimed the Fitzgibbon Cup title last year. It was the second title for O’Sullivan, English and Coughlan following their ’23 success. Tim O’Mahony and former Cork panellist Luke Meade claimed a Fitzgibbon Cup title in 2017 with O’Donovan, Gillane and Cian Lynch. Limerick leader Kiely of course attended UCC.

‘Wait A Minute, Mr Postman’

Although you can imagine it will be short and sweet this week and possibly the days before April 26 as well, O’Connor’s route as a postman brings him north of Charleville into areas of south Limerick. His twin brother Jerry is a Garda stationed in Bruff for the last 13 years.

‘Father And Son’

The lineage in the Limerick team is well-known. Seamus Flanagan may no longer be involved but there remain hurlers who have become more than their fathers’ sons – Nickie Quaid, Seán Finn, Nash and Gearóid Hegarty. Aidan O’Connor is too following in his father Joe’s footsteps. Joe and some of the others would have played in county fare against the fathers of current Cork hurlers Cunningham, Shane Kingston, Micheál Mullins and Tommy O’Connell.

It used to be a relationship of dependency.
