Ready Player One<\/a> is a 2011 hit sci-fi novel penned by Ernest Cline. The grandiose story envisioned a future in which humans and technology were firmly intertwined with nostalgic elements of the past, embracing 1980s pop culture. Acclaimed filmmaker Steven Spielberg adapted the novel’s dystopian world<\/a> into a feature film in 2018, bringing the impressive worlds to vivid life. The movie featured a stellar cast, including Mark Rylance, Simon Pegg, and even Ben Mendelsohn playing a villain as only he can. Most saw the movie as a fun, action-packed trip through nostalgia with a level of IP on display that only Spielberg could conjure.<\/p>\n

Given that Ready Player One earned $607 million at the global box office, it’s safe to say that the sci-fi novel adaptation was a crowd-pleasing hit. While audiences have expected that the film’s success may lead to the sequel novel, Ready Player Two, being turned into a follow-up movie<\/a>, that still hasn’t happened. However, thanks to Entertainment Weekly<\/a>, audiences now know that a new adaptation of Ready Player One is on the way. Still, it may not be what they were expecting.<\/p>\n

Cline’s 2011 book is being adapted into a graphic novel, aptly titled Ready Player One: The Graphic Novel. The comic iteration is being adapted by writer Scott Peterson (Batman: Gotham Adventures), with stunning artwork by Meredith Laxton (The Old Willis Place). Ten Speed Graphic is publishing the book, and the company took to Instagram to share a glimpse of a few pages featuring lavish colors to entice fans. Thankfully, Entertainment Weekly shared an image of the Target exclusive cover (viewable below), with the standard trade cover featuring a different image.<\/p>\n

Cline shared his excitement about working with the team on the graphic novel, praising their efforts and how the adaptation captures the “heart” and “humor” of his book. Cline said:<\/p>\n

“It’s been an absolute joy working with the team at Ten Speed Graphic, and I couldn’t be more excited to see Ready Player One take on a whole new life as a graphic novel. From the very beginning, this story has been the thrill of stepping into another world, and Meredith Laxton’s stunning artwork adds a whole new dimension to the adventure. This adaptation captures the heart, humor, and high-stakes fun of Wade’s journey in ways that even longtime fans will find surprising. I also think it will allow new readers to experience the magic of Ready Player One for the first time. I can’t wait for fans \u2014 both new and old \u2014 to see the world of OASIS come alive in a bold new way.”<\/p>\n

The story is set to closely follow Cline’s sci-fi novel, likely requiring some changes for the new entertainment medium, but is sure to delight fans when the Target exclusive hardcover hits shelves in the U.S. on Oct. 6, 2026. The trade and deluxe hardcover editions have a simultaneous release on Mar. 2, 2027, wherever books are sold, with each version said to retail for $35.<\/p>\n

As for Spielberg’s film adaptations, the director has stated that a sequel to Ready Player One is in development. It will be based on the sequel novel Ready Player Two, but Spielberg won’t be directing it. He is said to be producing the follow-up, though there are no definitive production plans or release information currently in place. Lead actor Tye Sheridan has previously expressed his excitement<\/a> about returning, stating, “I have my fingers crossed and, of course, I think it’s great and I loved working on that film, so yeah, I hope, I hope we get to do another.” While sci-fi fans are waiting for word of Spielberg’s sequel, the Ready Player One graphic novel is the perfect opportunity to revisit the OASIS.<\/p>\n
