An otherworldly<\/a> new exhibition is about to open at the Hammer Museum. <\/p>\n

Several Eternities In A Day, the museum\u2019s newest exhibition, features over 100 artworks from nearly two dozen artists, including commissioned works by Jackie Am\u00e9zquita, Carmen Argote, Edgar Calel, Raven Chacon, Guadalupe Maravilla, and Patricia Dominguez. The artists are from across the Americas, including Brazil, Mexico, Standing Rock, Argentina, Los Angeles, and more. <\/p>\n

The exhibition is embracing \u201cthe unpredictable nature of living materials,\u201d reads a press release. \u201cThese artists use materials such as avocado, cacao, achiote, cochineal, stone, clay, and natural dyes to create large-scale installations, paintings, works on paper, and mixed-media sculpture. Each of these materials is alive\u2014they evolve, decay, drip, crumble, and evaporate. They are rooted in the spirit, memory, and knowledge of Brown and Indigenous <\/a>worlds. The exhibition considers ideas around materials as records of the living and repositories of cosmic memory, organic decay and transformation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zo\u00eb Ryan, museum director, hopes the exhibition will allow guests to \u201creconsider how we relate to the world around us, and illuminate what it means to belong.\u201d Museums are typically meant to preserve, Ryan pointed out at a press preview on Friday, but these objects are \u201cdesigned to evolve, to decay, and eventually, to disappear entirely.\u201d<\/p>\n

Several Eternities is the first of four exhibitions for the Hammer Museum\u2019s spring exhibition openings. <\/p>\n
