After nearly three decades of hustle and reinvention, actor-producer-writer Bimal Oberoi, who played Shirani, the leader of Baloch, is having his moment in the spotlight, and he credits it to one film, \u201cDhurandhar\u201d.<\/p>\n
Oberoi played a small yet pivotal role in Aditya Dhar\u2019s two-part spy thriller \u201cDhurandhar\u201d. The first film released in December 2025, followed by the second instalment on March 19, which has already earned over Rs 1,500 crore at the global box office.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat \u2018Dhurandhar\u2019 has done for other actors and me is what one comes here for: recognition. It has been like a blessing,\u201d the Delhi-born actor told PTI in an interview.<\/p>\n
The 54-year-old has previously appeared in supporting roles in films, and OTT shows like \u201cTiger 3\u201d, \u201cPanipat\u201d, \u201cBard of Blood\u201d and \u201cMukhbir: The Story of a Spy\u201d, among others.<\/p>\n
\u201cDhurandhar\u201d follows the story of Ranveer Singh\u2019s Hamza Ali Mazari, an undercover Indian agent tasked with his most dangerous mission: infiltrating the criminal and political underworld of Karachi.<\/p>\n
Social media is buzzing with memes calling Oberoi the \u201cBlinkit of Balochistan\u201d, courtesy to his character Shirani\u2019s ability to deliver everything from heavy weapons to classified intel with the same lightning speed, as the delivery service company.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m overwhelmed,\u201d the actor simply said and credited Dhar for \u201cbeautifully\u201d writing and \u201cplacing\u201d his character in the film, for which he shot for barely 10 to 13 days.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve seven to eight scenes, the lengthiest dialogue was with Ranveer when we talk about the kids in the first part, otherwise I\u2019ve just one-word dialogues like \u2018Ho jayega\u2019, \u2018Kar denge\u2019, blinkint kind of dialogues,\u201d Oberoi said in a lighter vein.<\/p>\n
He also credited how every character in the film had \u201cample space to leave a mark\u201d in the film.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat I like personally about this film is that most of the characters, whatever was shot with them, has been retained. It\u2019s only because it has been made into two parts that all the characters come across very nicely. There is ample space for every actor to leave a mark.\u201d<\/p>\n
After working briefly as a medical representative in Mumbai, Oberoi met Daler Mehndi in Amritsar in the early 90s through a common friend. The noted Indian singer promised him that after the release of his first album, \u2018Bolo Tara Tara\u2019, he would take him to Mumbai.<\/p>\n
According to Oberoi, the singer-songwriter not only gave him the opportunity to feature in his album, \u201cHo Jayegi Balle Balle\u201d\u2014which marked his debut in the entertainment industry\u2014but also provided him with shelter and financial support.<\/p>\n
\u201cI stayed at his in-laws\u2019 house and he gave me 12 cheques of Rs 10,000 each dated the first of every month. I\u2019m grateful to him. I\u2019m still in touch with him, and he was very happy about the success of \u2018Dhurandhar\u2019 and said he will write on his social media account about me being the model in his music video,\u201d the actor said.<\/p>\n
Later, Oberoi found work in television and was part of various TV shows like Ekta Kapoor\u2019s \u201cItihaas\u201d, Anurag Basu\u2019s \u201cLove Story\u201d, and Anubhav Sinha\u2019s \u201cSaturday Suspense\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I came here in 1996, I had a well-sculpted body, was doing acting workshops and theatre, and thought this much was enough (to get work). There were hardly any casting agents then; I would drop pictures at the offices of filmmakers. I was picked up by Mr Lek Tandon for the serial called \u2018Daraar\u2019, and thereafter I was getting good offers on television,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
However, over time, he moved into writing, production, making ad films, music videos. He worked as an executive producer on films like \u201cTum Bin\u201d, \u201cSingh is Kinng\u201d, \u201cFerrari Ki Sawari\u201d, and as an associate producer on \u201cBe Happy\u201d. He also served as a writer on the Marathi film, \u201cApril May 99\u201d, which was released last year.<\/p>\n
\u201cI wanted to explore other things because in this industry, there is a lot of time at your disposal.<\/p>\n
At some point, I wanted to get back to acting, but then it took a backseat for about 17-18 years,\u201d Oberoi said, adding that the turning point came in 2018 when filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker encouraged him to return to acting and cast him in his movie, \u201cPanipat\u201d.<\/p>\n
Oberoi then continued theatre work and auditioned for various projects, via casting director Mukesh Chhabra.<\/p>\n
It was through Chhabra that the actor landed a role in \u201cDhurandhar\u201d after multiple rounds of auditions and was asked to grow a long beard and shave his hair, to which he instantly agreed.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was told about the character but once I was finalised, I was briefed about the script. I realised that this character needs a lot of quiet and silent moments, so I was just being myself,\u201d he recalled.<\/p>\n
After watching Oberoi\u2019s performance in \u201cDhurandhar\u201d, filmmaker Prashant Neel approached him for his upcoming film, \u201cDragon\u201d, starring Jr NTR.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe told me I was looking for this kind of a character for my film for quite some time, and while I was watching \u2018Dhurandhar\u2019, I saw you and felt, \u2018He\u2019s my man\u2019,\u201d the actor, who will be seen next in David Dhawan\u2019s \u201cHai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai\u201d, said.<\/p>\n
What sets Oberoi\u2019s journey apart is his endeavour to reinvent.<\/p>\n
He added that he writes scripts every day and is preparing to release a music video that features him reciting his own poetry.<\/p>\n
\u201cI kept reinventing and working on myself.
