We officially have a hatch!<\/p>\n

Around 9:30 p.m. Saturday, one of Jackie and Shadow\u2019s chicks officially broke out of the egg \u2014 the first time this season for the beloved SoCal eagle couple \u2014 and just in time for Easter Sunday.<\/p>\n

According to Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV)<\/a>, the organization that\u00a0maintains\u00a0a live camera of the birds\u2019 nest and runs an Eagle Log documenting their lives, the process of the chick emerging<\/a> took about\u00a036 hours and\u00a0required\u00a0\u201chard work\u00a0and a lot of rest for the chick.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for right now, the eaglet will be referred to as \u201cChick 1\u201d until a name is decided; the process begins with fundraiser naming contest, and local third graders have the honor\u00a0of selecting a name.\u00a0It will not be named Sandy \u2014 FOBBV says that, despite hundreds of requests to name a chick Sandy after Big Bear eagle expert Sandy Steers, Sandy herself would not have wanted that, and they are choosing to honor her wish.<\/p>\n

Chick 1\u2019s sibling pipped<\/a> \u2013 or made\u00a0an initial\u00a0small hole in its egg \u2013 on Saturday,\u00a0which indicates\u00a0it too will soon hatch. It\u2019s been a busy last few days for the famous eagles, who reside in the San Bernardino National Forest.<\/p>\n

Jackie and Shadow successfully raised two eaglets last season: Sunny and Gizmo. A third chick, Misty, died in a winter storm.<\/p>\n
