Brian Lohan expressed his displeasure with the application of the black-card rule after Clare held on for a three-point Division 1B league final victory over Dublin.<\/p>\n
Rory Hayes was sin-binned and a penalty awarded against him for his attempt to prevent an early Cian O\u2019Sullivan shot on goal.<\/p>\n
The Dublin forward\u2019s strike was saved by \u00c9ibhear Quilligan, but Thomas Walsh called the play back and John Hetherton slotted the penalty.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe black card was very soft,\u201d said the Banner boss. \u201cAgain, Clare penalised for a black card. I wonder will that rule apply to other teams in the championship or in the league? We\u2019ll see.<\/p>\n
\u201cI thought it was a free out. I couldn\u2019t believe that he was pointing to go in on a black card. Look, I haven\u2019t seen it back. This is just watching it live. I thought Rory was fouled.\u201d Lohan also revealed that Shane O\u2019Donnell\u2019s half-time withdrawal was due to a knock. The 2024 Hurler of the Year scored 1-1, assisted 0-2, and was fouled for three pointed frees during his 35 minutes on the pitch.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnother knock. We\u2019ll have to see how he is,\u201d said Lohan. \u201cWe\u2019re carrying a couple of knocks, and we\u2019ll hope to get them cleared up.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut you have to get up to the pitch of the game, and you have to attack the game. You\u2019re not going to get through these games unscathed. That\u2019s just the nature of the job.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Top scorer Mark Rodgers emerged as a concern when hobbling off after appearing to twist his ankle. The free-taker had nailed 0-12 from 12 shots, including three from play. Rodgers did express hope, though, that it was just a knock in collecting the man of the match award.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s with the physios now, so we\u2019ll see what he\u2019s like this evening and tomorrow morning,\u201d said Lohan.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey (O\u2019Donnell and Rodgers) are really good players. When they\u2019re attacking the ball, they\u2019re really good. Inside there, they were lightning for us in the first half.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
The manager was also asked about the fitness of Tony Kelly, David McInerney, and Adam Hogan.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe went with our strongest 15 that were fit. They\u2019re just not fit. Physios and our medical people have a lot of work to do in the next couple of weeks.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
When asked if any of them wouldn\u2019t make the Munster opener against Waterford in a fortnight\u2019s time, Lohan replied: \u201cHopefully not. We\u2019ll try and have a full panel to pick from.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
The goal chances allowed will be a major focus for Clare between now and then. Dublin carved out three goals from direct supply, plus a couple more chances.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s never good to concede three goals, and you\u2019ll find it very hard to win matches if you\u2019re conceding three goals, so that\u2019s an area that we need to work on,\u201d said Lohan.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe second goal that they got was a really soft goal from our defence to give away. Just not watching the runners at all. It was a really poor goal. They had one or two other opportunities as well. It\u2019s an area that we have to work on.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Lohan remains unsure what the effect of Division 1B hurling will be when they head into the Munster Championship.<\/p>\n
\u201cLook, 1B is not at the same level, obviously, as what 1A is. That\u2019s the big question \u2013 are we going to suffer in intensity when it comes to the first round and the second round of the Munster Championship, because we haven\u2019t been at the level that these guys are at?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
An intriguing selection was the presence of Niall O\u2019Farrell at centre-back. The Broadford hurler is better known as a free-taking forward.<\/p>\n
