The upcoming MCU X-Men<\/a> comeback will feature a major, Avengers-level threat. For the first time in a while, the X-Men will have a big impact on upcoming Marvel movies<\/a>. While characters from the X-Men movie timeline<\/a> have made cameos in several MCU movies, such as Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, only Deadpool & Wolverine felt like a significant entry point to the franchise for them.<\/p>\n

Even then, the film focused more on the two titular mutants, as well as other 20th Century Fox-era Marvel characters, like Blade, Elektra, and The Fantastic Four. In the story of Avengers: Doomsday, though, this will change. Avengers: Doomsday’s X-Men characters<\/a> will be front and center, featuring several heroes from the original trilogy.<\/p>\n

This is, naturally, exciting for anyone who has been a Marvel fan since the early 2000s. However, Avengers: Doomsday is not the only project that will solidify the X-Men’s true MCU comeback. Another, expected for a mid-2026 release, will feature an Avengers-level threat, setting up many enticing possibilities.<\/p>\n

X-Men ’97 Season 2’s Villain Is Apocalypse<\/p>\n

The revival in question is X-Men ’97 season 2<\/a>, the continuation of the revered show from 2024. After the conclusion of X-Men ’97 season 1 saw the titular team defeat Bastion, a new antagonist was teased. Several of the X-Men, who had been scattered throughout time, found themselves in ancient Egypt, alongside a powerful man named En Sabah Nur.<\/p>\n

The X-Men better know En Sabah Nur as Apocalypse, the villain he eventually becomes. In the X-Men’s present time, Apocalypse was one of the villains defeated in X-Men ’97’s prequel show, X-Men: The Animated Series. Despite his defeat, the latter show teased Apocalypse’s survival, though it is currently unclear whether that version and the one in X-Men ’97 are one and the same.<\/p>\n

Regardless, what is clear is that X-Men ’97 will have Apocalypse as its main villain. After all, another scene in the finale of that show teased Apocalypse recruiting his Four Horsemen, one potentially being the recently deceased Gambit. How exactly X-Men ’97 utilizes this time travel story and ties into X-Men: The Animated Series remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Apocalypse is back.<\/p>\n

Apocalypse Is An Avengers-Level Threat<\/p>\n

What makes this so interesting is just how big a threat Apocalypse has been in Marvel Comics. Apocalypse tends to initiate plans that threaten the entire Marvel world or, in bigger events, the universe. This makes him a threat not only to the X-Men but to the wider franchise, including the Avengers.<\/p>\n

To put it in MCU terms, Apocalypse is the equivalent of Thanos, only for the X-Men. The latter was a universe-changing threat that required all of the Avengers and their allies to team up to stop him. In many ways, Apocalypse is the same for the X-Men. The character is often considered to be on equal footing with the likes of Thanos, making Apocalypse an Avengers-level threat in every sense of the word.<\/p>\n

Admittedly, X-Men ’97 season 2 should focus on the team to make it as impactful as the first season was. That said, the show has teased the possibility of the Avengers getting involved, should Apocalypse prove to be a threat that impacts the entire world, as he is expected to. Bastion and Magneto did so in season 1, with several Avengers shown facing the effects.<\/p>\n

Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, and many others appeared in actual scenes, with others being referenced as part of the animated universe. What’s more, X-Men ’97 season 3 has already been confirmed and is set to continue plot elements introduced in season 2.<\/p>\n

This implies that Apocalypse will be an overarching, multiple-season threat, as opposed to being part of a smaller arc of a bigger season, as he was in the original show. This could allow X-Men ’97 to include the Avengers in a bigger capacity going forward, proving just how much of a danger Apocalypse is.<\/p>\n
