The world received its introduction to the two new arrivals at Jackie and Shadow’s Big Bear bald eagle nest on Easter morning, as both chicks had emerged from their shells to greet adoring fans.<\/p>\n
The second chick made its “final scoot” to free itself from its eggshell about 8:30 a.m. April 5, according to Friends of Big Bear Valley<\/a>, which operates the popular 24-hour live stream that broadcasts the daily activities at the nest to the world.<\/p>\n The slightly older sibling fully hatched about 9:30 p.m. Saturday, April 4, in the nest, which sits more than 140 feet up in a Jeffrey pine overlooking Big Bear Lake.<\/p>\n “Both chicks are doing well, looking great and their journey has just begun,” according to a statemen<\/a>t from FOBBV.<\/p>\n Big Bear bald eagle chicks hatch on Easter Sunday<\/p>\n 1 of 10<\/p>\n After beginning to pip Friday, Jackie and Shadow\u2019s first chick made its first bobbleheaded feeding Easter Sunday in front of more than 40,000 viewers while the second has fully emerged, captured on the Friends of Big Bear Valley\u2019s live eagle cam.<\/p>\n ‘Bobbleheads’ receive first feeding<\/p>\n Around the time the second chick was emerging from its shell, the first was receiving its first meal from Jackie.<\/p>\n “Initial feedings are often challenging as the chicks do not have much muscle strength in their necks,” FOBBV stated. “At this stage they are often called bobbleheads.”<\/p>\n “Shadow arrived a bit after the second hatch and saw his two tiny eaglets for the first time,” according to the organization. “He seemed quite proud and didn\u2019t waste any time snuggling in for daddy duty.”<\/p>\n More: Big Bear bald eagle egg begins hatching on live California cam<\/a><\/p>\n How will the new Big Bear bald eagle chicks be named?<\/p>\n For the time being, the eaglets are known simply as Chick 1 and Chick 2, although they are also described affectionately by FOBBV staff as “fluff balls.”<\/p>\n The organization has already received hundreds of suggestions from the public to name one of them Sandy, in honor of FOBBV Founder and longtime Executive Director Sandy Steers<\/a>, who died in February following a battle with cancer, representative said.<\/p>\n “Sandy would not want this,” the FOBBV statement said.<\/p>\n In the past, new eaglets have been named by third-grade students, who vote on the names from a list of suggestions provided by the public through a FOBBV fundraiser program.<\/p>\n “This brought great joy to Sandy through the years, and we will honor her by continuing this tradition,” according to the statement.<\/p>\n More: Many mourn death of Friends of Big Bear Valley Director Sandy Steers<\/a><\/p>\n How to watch the Big Bear bald eagle nest live<\/p>\n Eagle-eyed fans can follow the development of the chicks in real time via FOBBV’s YouTube page at youtube.com\/@FOBBVCAM<\/a>.<\/p>\n Updates are also provided on a regular basis via Facebook at facebook.com\/FOBBV<\/a>, and more information is available on the FOBBV website at friendsofbigbearvalley.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n
