EL SEGUNDO, Calif. \u2014 After being on pip watch throughout the week, Jackie and Shadow officially welcomed two new chicks to their nest over the weekend in Big Bear, marking their first eaglets of the year.<\/p>\n

The first chick broke free from its egg on Saturday night, a process that took 36 hours, the environmental group Friends of Big Bear Valley said on its website<\/a> that documents the eagles\u2019 activity.<\/p>\n

The second egg began to pip Sunday morning and hatched later that day, officially joining its sibling in the nest.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Friends of Big Bear Valley YouTube stream<\/a> caught the second chick making its way out of its egg on Sunday, while the first chick was feeding in the nest.<\/p>\n

The environmental group said that it had received hundreds of requests to name the first chick Sandy in honor of Sandy Steers, who passed away earlier this year. Steers, an environmentalist and wildlife advocate, was the former executive director of Friends of Big Bear Valley and was a big part of the effort to monitor the eagles in their nest.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur process has always been to have a fundraiser naming contest (details coming soon), and the local 3rd graders vote on the final names. This brought great joy to Sandy through the years, and we will honor her by continuing this tradition,\u201d the group said in a post on its website.<\/p>\n
