The death has taken place of the prominent poet, writer, haikuist and translator Gabriel Rosenstock<\/a>, following a short illness.<\/p>\n

He was 76.<\/p>\n

Born in Kilfinane, Co Limerick in 1949, Rosenstock wrote primarily in Irish.<\/p>\n

His works included children\u2019s literature in prose and verse, plays, novels, essays and short stories.<\/p>\n

He won numerous awards and was a member of Aosd\u00e1na<\/a>, the Irish academy of arts and letters. He was an honorary member of the European Haiku Society and was also a former chairman of Poetry Ireland\/\u00c9igse \u00c9ireann. <\/p>\n

A statement issued by his family said: \u201cHe believed in the power of poetry and in its ability to build bridges between different cultures. He was a prolific and restless soul who published over 400 books.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe will be greatly missed by all who knew him and who read him.\u201d<\/p>\n

He studied at University College Cork<\/a>, where he was involved with the publication of the literary journal Innti. <\/p>\n

His son, broadcaster Tristan Rosenstock, co-edited Inside Innti: A new wave in Irish Poetry<\/a> in 2024, featuring his father\u2019s work and the work of Michael Davitt, Nuala N\u00ed Dhomhnaill<\/a>, Liam \u00d3 Muirthile.<\/p>\n

Rosenstock translated titles from the Tintin and Asterix series of illustrated books to Irish. Other works include Irish editions of The Gruffalo (An Garbh\u00e1n), Sa T\u00f3ir ar an Yeit\u00ed (Cl\u00f3 Mhaigh Eo) and Birbal (Cl\u00f3 Iar-Chonnacht). <\/p>\n

His book Haiku M\u00e1s \u00c9 Do Thoil \u00c9! (An G\u00fam) won the Children\u2019s Books Judges\u2019 Special Award in 2015. <\/p>\n

He contributed to the LiederNet Archive of texts and translations of art songs and choral works. He translated songs by Nick Drake, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen for the Irish literary festival IMRAM. <\/p>\n

He is survived by his wife, Eithne, and their three children H\u00e9ilean, Saffron and Tristan.
