There was widespread shock when Dunnes Stores shut down it’s shop on West Street in Drogheda.<\/p>\n

Drogheda has received a major boost this week with the news that Dunnes Stores in West Street, is to reopen.<\/p>\n

The store was surprisingly closed a few months ago by the retail giant and some of the staff transferred to Scotch Hall. No reason was ever given by the company for the shock decision.<\/p>\n

However, the Drogheda Independent has learned that Dunnes Stores has decided to reopen it and they hope to be back trading on West Street within weeks. It is understood that some refurbishment is being carried out on the premises.<\/p>\n

The Drogheda store was one of the first to be opened outside of Dublin and Cork by Dunnes Stores founder Ben Dunne Snr in the early 1960s. He used to work in an Anderson shop in the town as a young man.<\/p>\n

Dunnes Stores boss Margaret Heffernan made the decision to re-open after returning to run the business following the recent death of her husband.<\/p>\n

It is believed she is very committed to their Drogheda operation and is determined to see their West Street store thrive again.<\/p>\n

The news will be warmly welcomed by Dunnes Stores customers, many of whom had gone to Tesco since the West Street shop shut.<\/p>\n

Many politicians in the town, including Mayor Michelle Hall, had written to Dunnes Stores asking the company to reconsider the decision.<\/p>\n
