{"id":385672,"date":"2026-04-07T03:01:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T03:01:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/385672\/"},"modified":"2026-04-07T03:01:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T03:01:09","slug":"carbery-rangers-pick-up-first-win-after-impressive-display-against-cill-na-martra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/385672\/","title":{"rendered":"Carbery Rangers pick up first win after impressive display against Cill na Martra"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\">Carbery Rangers: 1-17 (1-1-15)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Cill na Martra: 1-14 (1-1-12)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Carbery Rangers are up and running in the McCarthy Insurance Group Division 1 Football League after an impressive win over Cill na Martra at Rosscarbery on Monday evening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The West Cork side came into this Round 3 encounter on the back of two defeats to start their campaign \u2014 and two below-par performances at that \u2014 against Clonakilty and Newcestown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">They most certainly ticked every box in this one, producing a performance full of courage, spirit and pure grit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It was an outstanding team display, with important contributions from the likes of Paul Hodnett, Daragh Hayes and former Cork footballer John O\u2019Rourke.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Carbery Rangers did the hard work in the opening 30 minutes. Playing against a gale-force wind, they reached the break level and pushed on in the second half to secure a big win.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Cill na Martra remain on three points as their positive start comes to an end. They did have to play the final 11 minutes with 14 players following a red card to Ant\u00f3in \u00d3 Cuana. Picture: Martin Walsh<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Carbery Rangers started well, landing the first three points through a pair of Paul Hodnett efforts and a neat score from Hayes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Slowly but surely, the visitors began to get to grips with the game, aided by the wind, with Gear\u00f3id \u00d3 Goillidhe effective in midfield.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Cill na Martra\u2019s Danny \u00d3 Conaill kicked a two-pointer, followed by efforts from Tadhg \u00d3 Corcora (twice) and a trademark Daniel \u00d3 Duinn\u00edn score, leaving them 0-5 to 0-3 ahead after 14 minutes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">During that spell, Mark Hodnett had a golden opportunity to goal for Carbery Rangers but failed to convert.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Cill na Martra added two quick-fire points before the home side struck for goal on 24 minutes when John O\u2019Rourke finished off a flowing move that began with a splendid kick-out from goalkeeper Aaron O\u2019Brien.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Paul Hodnett pointed to draw the West Cork men level at 1-4 to 0-7 before the sides exchanged scores approaching the interval, deadlocked at the short whistle, 1-5 to 0-8.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">With the wind at their backs for the second half, Carbery Rangers pushed on. A Paul Hodnett free and points from John O\u2019Brien and Peadar O\u2019Rourke opened up a three-point buffer, 1-8 to 0-8.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">They made the most of a black card shown to Cill na Martra\u2019s \u00d3 Cuana in the 31st minute.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Further points from Paul Hodnett and Peadar O\u2019Rourke extended the lead before the visitors returned to 15 players.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Cill na Martra rallied with three successive points \u2014 Daniel \u00d3 Duinn\u00edn\u2019s effort the pick of them \u2014 to close the gap to 1-10 to 0-11 after 48 minutes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/5031134_4_articleinlinemobile_CRCNM5.jpg\" alt=\"Cill na Martra's Daniel \u00d3 Duinn\u00edn determined not to relinquish the ball against John O'Brien of Carbery Rangers. Picture: Martin Walsh<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">A minute later, \u00d3 Cuana picked up a yellow card which, added to his earlier black, resulted in a red \u2014 a major blow for the visitors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Carbery Rangers seized the momentum from there.
