The Pixel 10a features a brighter display, faster wired and wireless charging, and more durable Gorilla Glass 7i, among other upgrades, but none of these are huge leaps forward. With that in mind, if you can get the Pixel 9a on sale, I’d take it over the Pixel 10a (it’s often on sale for $400).

      SoC

           Tensor G4

      Display

           6.3-inch 1080 x 2424 pixel resolution, 120Hz, 3,000 nits

      RAM

           8GB

      Storage

           128GB

                    Related

Google wants you to turn your old laptop into a ChromeOS Flex machine with a simple USB kit

The cheap installation kit cost $3.

The phone’s design is so sleek that it feels like a flagship

Its completely flat camera bump is undeniably impressive

The Pixel 10a lacks several of the Pixel 10 Pro’s key features, including Google’s more powerful Tensor G5 chip, a fair amount of AI functionality, and its capable triple-rear camera setup.

On the other hand, it features a design that rivals its more pricey and higher-end counterparts, including a matte back with bright, eye-catching colors like Lavender (which is featured in this story), Berry, and Obsidian, squared-off sides, and a camera bump that sits entirely flush with the Pixel 10a, something we don’t see from high-end phones anymore, let alone mid-range devices. Being able to set the phone flat on my desk without a case is great, and I can’t remember the last time any smartphone let me do this. The Pixel 10a is also slightly lighter than both the Pixel 10 and the Pixel 10 Pro, making it easy to slide into a pocket and forget about it.

For just $500, it’s a seriously flashy smartphone that looks and feels way better than it should for its price, handily surpassing the iPhone 17e in the design department. If only the Pixel 10a featured PixelSnap, allowing it to work with Google’s ecosystem of magnetic, MagSafe-like accessories, then it would be nearly perfect in terms of design.

The excellent-looking display leaves the iPhone 17e’s screen in the dust

3,000 nits and 120Hz refresh rate on a mid-range phone is impressive

Last year’s Pixel 9a display was impressive, and this year, Google has kicked things up a notch by making the 6.3-inch screen even brighter, up to 3,000 nits from 2,000 nits, while keeping the same 120Hz refresh rate. Additionally, the front panel now features Gorilla Glass 7i, which offers improved durability over last year’s Gorilla Glass 3.

Comparing the Pixel 10a’s display directly to the Pixel 10 Pro’s, you really need to look to notice the quality difference. With the Pixel 10a, color reproduction is spot-on, and for a mid-range device, the black and white levels are impressive. Add in the 120Hz refresh rate, and everything from watching TV shows/movies to playing games and doom-scrolling, looks stunning on the smartphone’s impressive Super Actual display. At times, it’s difficult to believe this is a $500 smartphone.

The price is more than right

At $500, the Pixel 10a is one of the best smartphone deals out there

You quite simply just can’t beat the Pixel 10a’s price. It’s cheaper than Samsung’s A56, and it undercuts the iPhone 17e by $100. It might not be as cheap as some of the mid-range offerings out there, but you really do get what you pay for here — and, in my opinion, actually more than what you’re paying.

Google could have hiked the price by an additional $100 and added the Tensor G5 to the Pixel 10a, the same chip featured in the Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro, but in the context of a mid-range device, the Tensor G4 is still more than capable enough for most tasks. It benchmarks well under Qualcomm’s comparable Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 level, but who cares?

Mobile chips have been overkill for years now, and anyone buying a Pixel 10a likely doesn’t plan to do anything that intensive with the smartphone. They’ll likely edit a few images in Google Photos using AI, send some messages, and play a couple of games. All users like this want from a smartphone is a consistent experience they can rely on, and that’s what the Pixel 10a delivers.

The Pixel 10a offers top-tier camera performance

It features the best low-light camera performance I’ve seen from a mid-range phone

The Pixel 10a’s f/1.7 48-megapixel main shooter, f/2.2 13-megapixel ultrawide camera, and f/2.2 13-megapixel selfie shooter snap excellent photos, particularly under less-than-ideal, low-light conditions. In fact, the images are so great that I’d argue they’re very comparable to what you’d capture with a flagship Pixel 10 Pro. That said, it doesn’t feature optical zoom, which, while disappointing, is expected from a mid-range device. Thankfully, its 2x sensor-crop zoom is so good that most people probably won’t notice any difference in quality.

There are also actually useful AI camera features that go well beyond adding silly stickers and objects to images, like Add Me, which lets the photographer insert themselves into a group photo with AI, and Auto Best Take. This clever feature combines faces from several similar images to create a single photo where everyone is smiling and their eyes are open. In many ways, the Pixel 10a’s image quality feels far more high-end than it should be for a phone at this price, complete with the true-to-life image post-processing the Pixel line has become known for over the years.

                    Related

3 reasons Google’s Pixel still feels unlike any other Android phone

Whether it’s the smartphone line’s chilled-out design or its stripped-back UI, the Pixel remains unique in the Android space.

There are a lot of mid-range smartphones out there.
