<\/p>\nNew figures show that take-home grocery sales rose by 5.2% in the four weeks to March 22 compared with the same time last year.<\/p>\n
The figures from Worldpanel by Numerator show that while consumers shopped less in store – with trips down 2.6% year on year – packs per trip grew by 1.3% over the four week period.<\/p>\n
Trip frequency over the 12 weeks rose by 1.1%, but the volume of packs sold were down again, falling by another 2.7%, as the downward trend observed every month since June 2025 continued.<\/p>\n
Emer Healy, Business Development Director at Worldpanel by Numerator, said that as the conflict in the Middle East continues to influence global fuel prices, attention is increasingly turning to how these pressures will affect household budgets.<\/p>\n
“Grocery inflation remains high, and shoppers may now face additional price increases in the months ahead,” Ms Healy said.<\/p>\n
She noted that historically, during periods of rapid inflation, shoppers have adapted by making practical changes, such as opting for lower priced alternatives, buying slightly less or seeking out promotions.<\/p>\n
“We can expect to see shoppers making these changes in the months ahead,” she added.<\/p>\n
She also said that new analysis reveals that 26% of Irish shoppers now describe themselves as financially struggling.<\/p>\n
“Understanding how shoppers respond to growing economic pressure will be crucial for Ireland’s retailers over the coming months. While the situation is fast evolving, causing uncertainty for retailers and consumers alike, we’re monitoring the data closely to identify emerging shopper behaviours and provide clear guidance as the situation evolves,” she added.<\/p>\n
Today’s figures show that over 12% of households picked up hot cross buns over the month of March, spending an additional \u20ac498,000 on the treats year on year.<\/p>\n
Nearly half of Irish households also picked up an Easter egg in the run-up to the bank holiday weekend.<\/p>\n
With Easter eggs appearing on shelves earlier each year, shoppers were quick to indulge.<\/p>\n
Unit sales were up 45% year on year, with nearly half of Irish households buying Easter eggs during the month of March, which is up by more than 11 percentage points on the same time last year.<\/p>\n
Mother’s Day also drove an additional \u20ac2.3m in boxed chocolate sales compared with last year. Combined spending on frozen desserts, ice cream, savoury snacks and alcohol rose by an additional \u20ac10.7m year on year. <\/p>\n
Today’s Worldpanel by Numerator figures show that Dunnes maintains the lead with 24.3% value share in the latest 12 weeks up 4.9% in value growth. The retailer welcomed an influx of new shoppers which contributed an additional \u20ac11.5m to its overall performance. <\/p>\n

They also reveal that Tesco posted strong growth, with value sales up by 7.3% and value share reaching 23.6%. The recruitment of new shoppers contributed growth of \u20ac38m to sales.<\/p>\n
SuperValu’s value share stood at 19.3%, which is up 0.2% in value growth on last year, with increased packs per trip and new shoppers combining to contribute almost \u20ac15m in value growth.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Aldi holds an 11.1% share up 0.3% in value growth compared to last year, with an increase in footfall adding \u20ac12.3m in value sales over the period.<\/p>\n
Lidl grew its market share to 14.3% up from 13.6% in the previous period, an increase of 0.7 percentage points.<\/p>\n
Worldpanel by Numerator noted that it posted double-digit growth for the fourth consecutive period, with value growth of 11.7%.
