Allen School of Computer Science &amp; Engineering, wrote to more than 2,000 undergraduates.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnozy2g6000a356q1zqdb35y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Her message: AI is not killing your job options. It\u2019s expanding them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnozy2g6000b356qfkx1u0xz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            AI is making it possible to produce more with fewer workers. Anthropic\u2019s Claude, OpenAI\u2019s Codex and other AI tools can pump out code faster than ever, stoking fears that AI will one day replace software developer jobs entirely. Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff said the company stopped hiring engineers last year, and roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/internet\/2025\/04\/03\/how-the-us-public-and-ai-experts-view-artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">half the US public<\/a> believes AI will lead to fewer software jobs in the future. Rapid advancements in software development may be a signal of what AI will soon do to other fields.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnozy2g6000c356qqkewmjs6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But job openings for developers are growing. Companies believe they will pump out more software now that nearly anyone can be a coder with AI, increasing demand for seasoned engineers to shape these products.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnozy2g6000d356qqk5i3rqt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Instead of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/economy\/jobs\/tech-has-never-caused-a-job-apocalypse-dont-bet-on-it-now-d192b579?gaa_at=eafs&amp;gaa_n=AWEtsqdf46quhU28yDqsDr4wB-JMXe1pnKYHdLkEi7kFu6XoLh92l9MEhMlSRMNJCas%3D&amp;gaa_ts=69cfe852&amp;gaa_sig=xZ6TOTM5_z96gJytW9LAK9gTx3nPxDzTQBuomWJeFdjbkHUu4XpTZArEiyuRe751tuKR59PRJo46S6fFp0ApXw%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">wiping out jobs<\/a>, AI is shifting the tasks of developers. They are doing less routine coding work and devoting more of their schedule to overseeing swarms of AI-powered code-writing agents \u2014 autonomous bots that can complete tasks. Engineers, in turn, are spending more time designing the structure of software and generating ideas.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnozy2g6000e356qvhovusx7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe job will look different. That doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s going away,\u201d said Amanda Richardson, the CEO of CoderPad, a hiring platform companies use to interview software engineers. \u201cThe best engineers are spending all day, every day with AI and using it to make their designs better.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnozy2g6000f356q3da8tgwi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This has created a chaotic transition period, potentially hurting engineers who are reluctant to use AI or struggle to keep up with the technology.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnozy2g6000h356qji78zndc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Listings for software engineer jobs on Indeed are up 11% annually, a faster clip than postings overall, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citadelsecurities.com\/news-and-insights\/2026-global-intelligence-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">analysis<\/a> by Citadel Securities. Companies are expanding their software budgets and increasing engineer headcounts, a Bank of America survey found. The long-term outlook for the job appears strong, too. Software developer employment will grow 15% by 2034, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnozy2g6000i356q66c2fln1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Most computer science majors at the University of Washington are still taking full-time engineering positions in the tech industry after they graduate, Balazinska told students in her email.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gettyimages-2263702501.jpg\" alt=\"AI is not killing your job options, a University of Washington professor recently told students.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnozy2g6000j356qzwhpedtj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Industries experiencing rapid technological change have historically shown employment growth, and software development may be the latest example, said James Bessen, executive director of the Technology &amp; Policy Research Initiative at Boston University.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnozy2g6000k356qju7qufi6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            New technologies don\u2019t just replace labor with machines \u2014 they also reduce prices and improve product quality. This <a href=\"https:\/\/scholarship.law.bu.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1270&amp;context=faculty_scholarship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">increases customer demand <\/a>and drives up employment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnozy2g6000l356qf6sm8euc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Automation drove down the cost of producing textiles in the 19th century, leading to a 100-fold increase in cotton cloth consumption, he said. Employment in the textile industry soared until roughly the 1960s.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnozy2g7000m356qkg33stv6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The companies that come out on top will connect junior AI \u201cpower users\u201d with senior employees that understand the industry, said Frank Nagle, a research scientist at MIT\u2019s Initiative on the Digital Economy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnozy2g7000n356quo9jkzga@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            IBM, for example, is tripling entry-level hiring in the United States, including software developers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnozy2g7000o356qhuj9deuc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Junior engineers are now capable with AI of taking on tasks that once required experienced developers, Neel Sundaresan, IBM\u2019s general manager of automation and AI, said in an email.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnozy2g7000p356qm5dt2rp5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The job at IBM has shifted from routine coding tasks to working directly with customers and specifying features that can be created with AI. \u201cBecause the role is changing, we need people who can grow into it,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnozy2g7000q356qdrcxx440@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Intuit, the fintech company behind TurboTax and Credit Karma, is also hiring more early career developers who have grown up using AI and may understand it better than mid-career workers, Alex Balazs, Intuit\u2019s chief technology officer, said in an interview.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnozy2g7000r356q9b7boq41@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Five or 10 years ago, a developer wrote every line of code without automation. But Intuit\u2019s engineers now focus on the more complex aspects of code and software design, Balazs said. They also spend more time solving customer problems, such as auto-categorizing transactions from a bank or automatic payment reminders.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnozy2g7000s356q0ul80ov2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey actually have the time to worry about those things because they don\u2019t have to spend endless hours coding boilerplate, common things,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnozy2g7000u356qc7acntb0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s still an anxious time for developers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnozy2g7000v356qnubpw8sz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As companies ramp up spending on AI, they\u2019re also looking to cut costs. Computer science graduates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/28\/tech\/computer-science-graduates-job-hunt-ai\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said they struggled to find work last year<\/a>, and tech giants like Oracle, Amazon and Microsoft have laid off tens of thousands of workers in recent months.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gettyimages-2258344211.jpg\" alt=\"Amazon and other tech giants are laying off workers, raising fears about AI's impact on the labor market.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1334\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnozy2g7000w356qa8ubcca6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Rank and file workers are scrambling to adjust to the AI era. At the pace AI is evolving, they\u2019ll likely have to continue to learn new skills and find ways to use the technology to stand out.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnozy2g7000x356q5atfddio@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Customers and colleagues often press Balazs on the future of the job and whether software development is a career worth pursuing. His answer: companies covet developers who know how to marshal AI.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnozy2g7000y356q6ozvktjz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Magdalena Balazinska had a similar message to computer science students at the University of Washington.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnozy2g7000z356qy6j6he8a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cRoll-up your sleeves,\u201d embrace the change and keep learning, she said.
