The Miniature Wife is a charming sci-fi comedy starring Matthew Macfadyen and Elizabeth Banks as a married couple experiencing a particularly rocky patch in their relationship. The central tension for the series comes from the fact that Macfadyen’s character, a gifted scientist named Les Littlejohn, shrinks his wife, Lindy (Banks), in the middle of an argument.

While Les has figured out how to shrink organic material, he has yet to figure out how to make things big again, which provides the conflict for how the series develops, and the Littlejohns have a hard time resolving their issues, particularly now, thanks to their size difference.

The Miniature Wife Feels Like A More Adult Honey, I Shrunk The Kids

As a kid, I remember watching Rick Moranis in Honey, I Shrunk The Kids, and the subsequent sequels, and finding myself rolling on the floor laughing at the absurd and wild shenanigans of the characters in the film. Now, decades later, the technology has sufficiently advanced to take a big idea like shrinking central characters and having interactions between those that stand six inches tall and those closer to six feet in the same shots, and it feels as though they have recaptured some of that incredible childlike wonder.

It’s got a lot of charm and feels like a wonderfully authentic and genuine exploration of a strained relationship.

Now, The Miniature Wife is not a kid’s show, per se, but it does feel like an evolution of the concept, and one that comes together in a delightful way in this series. And of course, as a more mature version of a similar story about a dysfunctional family, a brilliant scientist, and a divided family, there are themes that this show explores that are appropriately advanced.

The Littlejohns are far from a perfect family, but despite the unique circumstances of a shrunken wife, many of the issues that they face feel grounded and familiar for those navigating relationships, compromises with partners, and balancing everything else with the stress of careers and raising kids. It’s got a lot of charm and feels like a wonderfully authentic and genuine exploration of a strained relationship, while also including absurd humor, with stand-out comedy talent like Macfadyen and Banks leading the charge.

The series also does a great job of making Banks’ shrunken state convincing, though it would have been great to see more practical sets used in order to sell the idea. Regardless, the show cleverly navigates the size difference, and it sells interactions between little and large characters with relatively no friction to the point that it’s easy to get lost in the plot, and only occasionally spot some film magic being used to create the desired effects.

The Supporting Cast Of The Miniature Wife Makes the Show Stand Out

Matthew Macfadyen has proven himself as a capable and thoroughly entertaining actor in projects like Succession and Deadpool & Wolverine. Meanwhile, his co-star Elizabeth Banks has been a staple in the comedy genre for decades, and I was excited to see their chemistry play out together here in The Miniature Wife. Unfortunately, with the technical aspects of recording both characters in different settings, their dynamic acting opposite one another aren’t nearly as present in the show as expected.

Despite that, the show leans heavily into exploring the connections between these characters and others, with Les trying to keep his wife’s shrunken status a secret and being under pressure at work. Meanwhile, Banks puts on an incredible performance, mostly engaging with inanimate objects and exploring the new confines for her character due to her shrunken-down state.

On top of that, the supporting cast, which includes standout performances from O-T Fagbenle, Zoe Lister-Jones, and a welcome addition in the form of comedian Ronny Chieng, adds up to an incredible cast of well-developed characters who elevate the series to another level and help to provide plenty of laughs and emotional beats along the way.

In addition, with the shrunken size of Banks’s character, the way that the world is explored from her point of view, and the things she engages with, from pets to a fully equipped dollhouse, is absolutely stunning. Elizabeth Banks is easily the most entertaining and enjoyable part of the show, and it would have been great to see even more of her character, though developing the connections with others would have been challenging and likely costly.

The Miniature Wife Tells A Complete Story

The Miniature Wife season 1 goes on an incredible journey across ten episodes, and by the end of the season, it feels complete. Because the show is based on a short story by the same name from writer Manuel Gonzales, it speaks to the fact that the show seems to fit the limited series format, and honestly, it may do the show more harm than good to push beyond and try to expand to include future seasons.

None of that is to say that the show doesn’t work, or that the characters aren’t a lot of fun, but Macfadyen, Banks, and everyone behind the cameras have done an incredible job translating this story to the screen and capturing a snapshot of this couple’s life.

The Miniature Wife season 1 goes on an incredible journey across ten episodes.

The Miniature Wife is laugh-out-loud funny, with a brilliant cast that takes a seed of an idea and turns it into something fast-paced, vibrant, and entertaining. The tension between the Littlejohns feels authentic, and the way that this is explored in an over-the-top and slapstick fashion gives the show a quirkiness that makes it stand out from other entries in either the sci-fi or drama space.

However, the concept feels slightly limited, and at the end of 10 episodes, I don’t feel a need to see more of the Littlejohns or to see how their stories progress beyond this misadventure.

With all of that said, The Miniature Wife manages to beautifully capture the nostalgia and sensation of a film like Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, and it feels like a worthy spiritual successor that brings this story into the modern era, for an audience that has now begun to navigate the challenges of relationships and being an adult. Fans of that movie will assuredly find this series captivating. But the life of the story has run its course by the time the credits roll on episode 10.

The Miniature Wife season 1 will be available to stream on Peacock in full from April 9.
