The foldable iPhone<\/a> is literally becoming clearer as we inch ever closer to its reported September announcement alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In a post on X<\/a>, longtime leaker Sonny Dickson shared images of what he claims are dummy models depicting the final designs of the foldable iPhone.\u00a0Physical mockups typically leak out months in advance of a device\u2019s announcement as the complex supply chain of case and accessory makers get their products ready to coincide with the device\u2019s launch.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a video of somebody opening the dummy model to show off its widescreen aspect ratio, as well as comparing it to a dummy model for the iPhone 18 Pro Max:<\/p>\n

The dummy models corroborate several previous leaks and reports on the foldable iPhone, including its smaller and squatter screen (rumored to be around 5.5 inches for the outside display and around 7.8 inches for the inside screen). Sam Kohl over at his channel AppleTrack actually created realistic-looking 3D renders<\/a> of the final design a few weeks back.<\/p>\n

This alleged final, final, final design does show a few new details, including a plateau for the dual-lens camera system that is smaller than illustrated in 3D renders. Other details that the dummy units don\u2019t show: a cutout like on the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max<\/a> and a MagSafe ring. The latter is particularly concerning. It would be a major misstep if the foldable iPhone, which is rumored to start at around $2,000, doesn\u2019t have MagSafe or wireless charging.<\/p>\n

Consumers and reviewers rightfully called Apple out for omitting MagSafe from the iPhone 16e<\/a>. Apple corrected its mistake by adding the feature into the iPhone 17e<\/a>, which I recently reviewed favorably for its fantastic value. There will be rioting in the streets if Apple\u2019s cheapest iPhone has MagSafe, but its most expensive iPhone doesn\u2019t. Basic Qi2 wireless charging would suffice, but MagSafe is now widely considered an iPhone staple.<\/p>\n

It might be called \u2018iPhone Ultra\u2019 <\/p>\n

The rumor mill is still undecided on what Apple will ultimately call the foldable iPhone. The leading speculation<\/a> (via MacRumors<\/a>) suggests Apple may go with \u201ciPhone Ultra,\u201d a moniker it has used for its most powerful devices. Currently, there are two Apple products with Ultra in their names\u2014the Apple Watch Ultra 3<\/a> and the Mac Studio with M3 Ultra chip<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I offer my own name suggestions:<\/p>\n

There\u2019s speculation that the foldable iPhone will be called the \u201ciPhone Ultra\u201d<\/p>\n

I think \u201ciPhone Studio\u201d has a nice ring to it and would differentiate Apple\u2019s foldable from other Ultra-branded devices like Samsung\u2019s Galaxy S26 Ultra<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Launch delay? <\/p>\n

While Apple is widely expected to announce the foldable iPhone in September, the device may not launch until several months later. The latest supply chain checks<\/a> (via MacRumors<\/a>) indicate that Apple is still negotiating pricing on certain components and has not yet locked in certain design decisions ahead of mass production. This could push the release date for the foldable iPhone to as late as December.<\/p>\n

While Apple usually releases its new iPhones around one to two weeks after their announcement in September, there have been times where some models launched later. In September 2017, the iPhone X was announced alongside the iPhone 8 \/ 8 Plus, but it didn\u2019t actually launch until November that year. The following year, the iPhone XR was announced with the iPhone XS \/ XS Max in September, but it wasn\u2019t released until late October.<\/p>\n

Bloomberg\u2019s Mark Gurman rebutted<\/a> possible delays for the foldable iPhone. \u201cWhile the complexity of the new display and materials may limit initial supply for several weeks, Apple is currently operating with a plan to put the device on sale around the same time\u2014or very soon after\u2014the new non-foldable models,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

Anything could change in the next few months. Apple is a maestro when it comes to managing the supply chain to manufacture its products. But even if the foldable iPhone is delayed, I\u2019d bet people will queue up. It\u2019s going to be the first real deviation for the iPhone\u2019s form factor since its introduction.<\/p>\n
