{"id":389196,"date":"2026-04-09T04:19:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T04:19:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/389196\/"},"modified":"2026-04-09T04:19:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T04:19:07","slug":"abu-dhabi-scientists-create-cancer-busting-substances-that-show-up-on-mri-scans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/389196\/","title":{"rendered":"Abu Dhabi scientists create cancer-busting substances that show up on MRI scans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-0-7TCC5VLU2NEKFGTJYUVI66ZSUA\">Scientists in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/abu-dhabi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/abu-dhabi\">Abu Dhabi<\/a> have developed drugs that both destroy cancer calls and show up in MRI scans, which can help make treatment more effective.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-1-HU47QZTTLRAITDZTYVTGCGLOHU\">The substances represent a potential new class of drugs that may be more effective than existing forms of treatment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-3-7Q64ZT26QVA55IBT6CHNOXZICA\">They have been tested only in mice but the hope is that further investigations could lead to the drugs or ones like them being used in people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-4-EPXBHUPTYNCEREIEWW2CE2IXB4\">\u201cWhen you\u2019re able to inject a drug and follow it, it gives a better chance to cure the disease than injecting it and praying that it reaches the site,\u201d said Ali Trabolsi, professor of chemistry at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/uae\/2026\/04\/03\/abu-dhabi-researchers-identify-molecule-primed-to-boost-fight-against-parkinsons-disease\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/uae\/2026\/04\/03\/abu-dhabi-researchers-identify-molecule-primed-to-boost-fight-against-parkinsons-disease\/\">New York University Abu Dhabi<\/a> and leader of the group behind the discovery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-5-Q2XB2CCQLZHC5J53G4Q6G3LV7A\">\u201cIf there\u2019s an issue in not reaching the cancer site, you can change its chemical properties in order for it to reach the site.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-7-BN4KHMFCSNHTHDQ4A3ZEV3YW3U\">MRI, magnetic resonance imaging, is based on using a magnetic field and radio waves generated by a computer to give a three-dimensional view of structures within the body.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-8-WFYH45Q7OJA5LF3CKM5IZ5QSJQ\">It often involves contrast agents being injected into the body to show structures more clearly, but typically these substances do not also treat cancer.<\/p>\n<p>How significant is the breakthrough?<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-10-SQW7OBUVMZF2BBSWNOKBRINQCU\">The substances the scientists in Abu Dhabi have developed, as well as differing from typical contrast agents in that they have a therapeutic effect, are also unlike typical cancer drugs, as they have a large and complex molecular structure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-11-P57FUFN7SRC7LEIRFB7SZRTFBY\">The drugs used in the latest study contain a metal, in this case manganese, and a carbon-based organic element. They are described as having interlocked structures, like knots and rings, and their shape is key to their effects in the body.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-12-ZRUUHCAVIJEN7JXYDA4I4TTBPI\">While the chemicals are inert in normal tissue, they become active in tumours, which are more acidic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-13-4HRPDHCVARCILBTAPENMNJJ6M4\">The scientists at NYUAD found that the substances suppressed the growth of an aggressive brain tumour called a glioblastoma in mice that had been injected with cancer cells to encourage tumour formation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-14-JTJZYS3UWFDGHF565CF6DO7XXM\">Mice that had been injected with cancer cells but were not treated with the drugs experienced aggressive tumour growth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-15-SHWLXDPR7NCIXNXEEXYL2FIJT4\">Dr Farah Benyettou, first author of the study, said the large molecules did not remain in the body for long. \u201cWe showed the molecule was eliminated from the body after three days,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-16-ND46TM6XZBDK7DBQ5SKCQLTLFY\">The way in which the molecules are eliminated within 72 hours means the substances are \u201cviable candidates for clinical applications with minimal long-term toxicity\u201d, the researchers wrote in their paper.<\/p>\n<p>Moving to personalised medicine<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-19-YV3FHL2MX5BE7PX6OIRRKAV6HY\">The technology could potentially be harnessed to make cancer treatment more specific to the particular patient, tying in with the move towards what is called \u201cpersonalised medicine\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-20-GSFMDOKMRVGFNB5UY5Y4XVBP44\">The work, published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, was carried out with researchers at other institutions including the University of Utah in the US, where scientists worked with mice that were genetically engineered to develop tumours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-21-3G5OBSIFH5FVFDTMFSAN46ORLM\">The chemicals were developed by Dr Thirumurugan Prakasam, a research scientist at NYUAD who specialises in the synthesis of what chemists call metal-organic non-trivial structures. This name reflects that the substances contain metal and organic elements, are complex to produce or have properties that are not obvious.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-22-XUMFNWYD3RH6LINTX2HOGAQLO4\">Synthesising the substances involved six to eight steps, Dr Prakasam said, and initially took two to three months.
