What nearly 80 years of polls say about US attitudes on space"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnqg8t03002x27nrequ89lwb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Americans\u2019 opinion of space exploration is pretty high.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnqg9ah900043b6qa3r6adzp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipsos.com\/sites\/default\/files\/ct\/news\/documents\/2026-04\/Ipsos%20Poll%20on%20Space%20Exploration%20April%202026%20Topline.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">an Ipsos poll<\/a> conducted last week just after the launch of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/06\/science\/live-news\/nasa-artemis-2-flyby-moon-mission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis II<\/a>, US adults say, 62% to 34%, that the benefits of NASA sending people into space are worth the costs, with nearly identical levels of support among both parties.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnqg9ah900053b6qbmqkx0pg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even amid dismal ratings for the US government overall, views of NASA remain relatively starry-eyed. The agency gets an 80% favorability rating in Ipsos\u2019 survey. And, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/696059\/americans-job-ratings-six-key-agencies-worsen.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">in contrast to opinions of many other agencies<\/a>, opinions of the space program are relatively unpolarized.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnqg9ah900063b6q2vvp3bes@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That stands out because views about the country\u2019s space program haven\u2019t always been so positive. In polls taken shortly after Americans first landed on the moon in 1969, less than half the public thought the costs were justified \u2013 39% in a 1970 Harris poll, and 41% in an NBC\/AP survey fielded nine years later. But in the years since, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/260309\/years-moon-landing-support-space-program-high.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Gallup has found<\/a>, views of the space program\u2019s merits have charted a steady upwards trajectory, reaching a record 64% when they last asked around the moon landing\u2019s 50th anniversary.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnqg9ah900073b6qqpo9roz8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One polling caveat here: Unlike the space programs they\u2019re asking about, survey questions don\u2019t exist in a vacuum. Polling that\u2019s focused more on costs can tell a different story. In a 2003 CNN\/USA Today\/Gallup survey, support for launching a new program to send astronauts to the moon was 22 points lower if the phrase \u201cspending billions of dollars\u201d was mentioned in the question.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnqg9ah900083b6qghhqs2d8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Public opinion polling, much like America\u2019s space program, came of age during the mid-20th century, meaning that we have plenty of data of Americans\u2019 views of space throughout the years. About five years later, confidence in the men in rockets\u2019 prospects had more than doubled to 38%. And by 1957, asked to guess at a timeline for reaching the moon, around 40% expected it to happen in the next quarter-century or so, although 14% still gave answers that were reported by the pollsters as falling into the category of \u201cnever, silly.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnqgb5b4000h3b6qq011akg5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Americans\u2019 early skepticism about space flight was even stronger when they were asked if they might like to go along. In a Gallup poll conducted near the start of 1955, just 9% said they\u2019d like to go along on the first rocket ship to the moon if asked, and two years later, just 5% said they\u2019d volunteer to be the first one up in a spacecraft.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gettyimages-1349715790.jpg\" alt=\"Spiro Agnew and Lyndon Johnson Watch the Apollo 11 Lift off, Florida, USA, 1969. In a 1999 CBS News poll, 21% said both that they expected \u201cvacation cruises in outer space\u201d to be a feature of the 21st century and that they would like to go. (The same percentage, 21%, told CNN\/Time pollsters in 2000 that they\u2019d board a spacecraft if asked by \u201cbeings from another planet.\u201d)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnqgbb2f000k3b6qbe8zut2v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In <a href=\"https:\/\/apnorc.org\/projects\/space-exploration-attitudes-toward-the-u-s-space-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a 2019 AP-NORC poll<\/a>, about half of Americans said they\u2019d take a chance to orbit the Earth, with 41% saying they\u2019d travel to the moon and 31% that they\u2019d take a trip to Mars. And <a href=\"https:\/\/maristpoll.marist.edu\/polls\/marist-poll-results-analysis-civilian-space-travel\/#sthash.RWYvbqha.dpbs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a 2021 Marist poll<\/a> found that 45% would go to space, with substantial gaps by age and gender. Men and people younger than 45 displayed far more enthusiasm for the idea.\n    <\/p>\n<p>        The moon landing leaves a deep impact<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnqgbxip000o3b6qyf9cevjy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Asked in the autumn of 1969 to name the most outstanding thing to happen anywhere in the world that year, 49% of Americans mentioned the moon landing. That was roughly four times as high as the mentions of any other topic. In a retrospective survey two decades later, Gallup found that more than 8 in 10 of Americans who were at least 5 years old during the moon landing said they\u2019d watched it on TV at the time.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnqgci9w000s3b6q05mqvcsi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Appreciation for that milestone hasn\u2019t faded. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/1999\/07\/03\/successes-of-the-20th-century\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a 1999 Pew survey<\/a>, the space program topped Americans\u2019 list of the country\u2019s greatest achievements that century, and in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2020\/09\/29\/americans-prioritize-being-a-world-leader-in-scientific-achievements-more-than-other-global-publics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2019 Pew poll<\/a>, 83% said that NASA\u2019s space exploration program had proved to be a good thing for society. Per a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/moon-landing-is-still-a-source-of-pride-cbs-news-poll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CBS\/SSRS poll<\/a> in 2019, 45% of Americans said there hadn\u2019t yet been any other national accomplishment that gave them as much pride in the US as the moon landing, with 71% favoring \u201csending astronauts to explore the moon again.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/art002e009287-orig.jpg\" alt=\"Earth sets behind the moon on Monday, April 6, during the lunar flyby of the Artemis II mission.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1667\" width=\"2500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>      In pictures: The historic Artemis II moon mission<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnqgcvyu000u3b6qabbabh79@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Back in 1969, Gallup asked Americans what they expected the future to look like in 1990. Some 18% expected 1990 to include mankind \u201cliving on the moon.\u201d For context, 70% expected a cure for cancer, and 10% expected an end to all civilization.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnqgd172000w3b6qrg9z0lj3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Americans\u2019 ideas for space exploration have long gone beyond the moon. Asked in a 1987 USA Today poll what goal they would set \u201cas man\u2019s next great achievement in space\u201d if they were running the space program, just 4% suggested a return to the moon or the building of a moon colony. Another 23% wanted to focus on sending people to live in a space station, with 9% wanting to reach another planet and 1% suggesting, somewhat ambitiously, inventing time travel.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnqgd172000x3b6q1i1twgji@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the 2019 AP-NORC poll, Americans said, 37% to 18%, that sending astronauts to Mars should be a bigger priority than returning to the moon.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnqgd172000y3b6qhb1bfl0b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Polls are now looking ahead to the 2070s. By that time, most Americans expect that space tourism will become routine, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/science\/2023\/07\/20\/americans-views-of-space-u-s-role-nasa-priorities-and-impact-of-private-companies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to Pew Research<\/a>. A not insignificant 44% are expecting the US military to \u201cfight against other nations in space,\u201d with fewer holding out hope for interplanetary colonies.\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Americans\u2019 opinion of space exploration is pretty high.
