Gillian Anderson, Rami Malek, Cara Delevingne and John Travolta are expected to walk the red carpet at Cannes this year, as the world\u2019s most influential film festival unveiled an auteur-heavy lineup for its 79th edition.<\/p>\n
Competing for the coveted Palme d\u2019Or will be new films by heavyweights Pedro Almod\u00f3var, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Pawe\u0142 Pawlikowski<\/a>, L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Nemes and Asghar Farhadi.<\/p>\n Spanish director Almod\u00f3var, who previously won awards at Cannes for All About My Mother and Volver, makes a return with Bitter Christmas, about a group of film-maker friends who cannibalise each other\u2019s lives for their work.<\/p>\n Sandra H\u00fcller stars as the daughter of German novelist Thomas Mann<\/a> in Oscar-winning Polish film-maker\u2019s Pawlikowski\u2019s Fatherland, set on the eve of the Manns\u2019 return from American exile after the second world war.<\/p>\n Hungarian director Nemes, who won an Oscar for Son of Saul in 2016, returns with French resistance drama Moulin, while Romanian director Cristian Mungiu (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days) makes a comeback with Norway-set Fjord.<\/p>\n Exiled Russian auteur Andrey Zvyagintsev<\/a> (Leviathan) is to premiere his film Minotaur, a political thriller about a Russian business executive who discovers his wife is having an affair, while two-time Oscar winner Asghar Farhadi (A Separation) brings Parallel Tales, starring Isabelle Huppert and Vincent Cassel.<\/p>\n Two of Japan\u2019s leading film-makers will present new films on the French Riviera, with Drive My Car director Ryusuke Hamaguchi showing All of a Sudden, set in a Parisian nursing home, and the premiere of Hirokazu Kore-eda\u2019s AI-themed science-fiction drama Sheep in the Box.<\/p>\n After talk around the fringes of last year\u2019s festival was dominated by US president Donald Trump\u2019s threat to impose tariffs on \u201cmovies made in foreign lands\u201d, this year\u2019s competition lineup is notable for a near-total absence of American directors.<\/p>\n The only US director in the main competition is Ira Sachs with The Man I Love, a musical fantasy depicting the impact of the Aids epidemic on struggling artists, starring Rami Malek<\/a>, Tom Sturridge and Rebecca Hall.<\/p>\n In the Un Certain Regard slot there will be premieres for American film-maker Jane Schoenbrun\u2019s Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, starring Gillian Anderson, and Jordan Firstman\u2019s directorial debut Club Kid featuring himself, Cara Delevingne<\/a>, Diego Calva and Eldar Isgandarov.<\/p>\n Hollywood star Andy Garcia\u2019s noir-ish Diamond will be shown out of competition but comes with a starry cast including Bill Murray, Dustin Hoffman, Vicky Krieps and Danny Huston.<\/p>\n
