Hormonal changes, particularly during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a70007016\/best-strength-exercises-menopause\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a70007016\/best-strength-exercises-menopause\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"menopause\" data-node-id=\"4.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">menopause<\/a>, can lead to reduced  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a706692\/how-to-build-muscle\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a706692\/how-to-build-muscle\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"muscle\" data-node-id=\"4.3\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">muscle<\/a> mass, lower bone density and slower recovery.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">A new  <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosmedicine\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pmed.1004976\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosmedicine\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pmed.1004976\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"study\" data-node-id=\"9.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a>  published in PLOS Medicine reinforces this, finding that women who meet recommended physical activity guidelines have around half the risk of dying from any cause compared to those who are inactive.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Researchers from the University of Sydney analysed data from 11,169 women born between 1946 and 1951 (aged 47-52 at the start of the study) over more than 15 years. Participants, part of the  <a href=\"https:\/\/alswh.org.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/alswh.org.au\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Australian Longitudinal Study on Women&#039;s Health\" data-node-id=\"13.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Australian Longitudinal Study on Women&#8217;s Health<\/a>, completed nine surveys between 1996 and 2019.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">They reported how often they met the World Health Organization guideline of 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per week between 2001 and 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The study\u2019s results<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"24\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Just 5.3 per cent of women who met the activity guidelines died during the study, compared with 10.4 per cent of those who didn\u2019t. In other words, staying active throughout midlife was linked to roughly half the risk of death.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"28\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Similar trends were seen for deaths from cardiovascular disease and cancer, although smaller sample sizes made these findings less conclusive. Researchers were also unsure whether starting exercise later \u2013 in your mid-50s or 60s \u2013 offers the same benefits as staying active consistently through midlife.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"33\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">&#8216;Staying active throughout midlife can make a real difference for women\u2019s long-term health,&#8217; said study author Dr Binh Nguyen, from the Prevention Research Collaboration at the University of Sydney\u2019s Charles Perkins Centre and School of Public Health. &#8216;Maintaining recommended levels of physical activity over multiple years helps protect against early death,&#8217; she added.<\/p>\n<p>Physical activity guidelines<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"38\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Like the WHO, the NHS  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/live-well\/exercise\/physical-activity-guidelines-for-adults-aged-19-to-64\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/live-well\/exercise\/physical-activity-guidelines-for-adults-aged-19-to-64\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"recommends\" data-node-id=\"38.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recommends<\/a> 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous activity a week for adults aged 19-64.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"42\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Moderate activity includes brisk  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/walking\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/walking\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"walking\" data-node-id=\"42.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">walking<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/fat-loss\/a70151661\/cycling-vs-swimming\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/fat-loss\/a70151661\/cycling-vs-swimming\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"cycling\" data-node-id=\"42.3\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cycling<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/workouts\/g35987407\/dance-workouts\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/workouts\/g35987407\/dance-workouts\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"dancing\" data-node-id=\"42.5\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">dancing<\/a>.
