{"id":390369,"date":"2026-04-09T19:28:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T19:28:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/390369\/"},"modified":"2026-04-09T19:28:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T19:28:08","slug":"cork-minor-team-named-for-munster-championship-opener","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/390369\/","title":{"rendered":"Cork minor team named for Munster championship opener"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\">While Cork begin their Electric Ireland Munster MHC campaign tonight without a couple of key players, manager Donal Mulcahy is optimistic that the young Rebels will put in a strong display.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Captain Eoin Considine and Callum Coffey \u2013 a starter in last year\u2019s provincial-winning campaign \u2013 are unavailable for the trip to Cappoquin Logistics Fraher Field to take on Waterford (7pm).<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The D\u00e9ise are the reigning All-Ireland champions and started off with a win against Limerick last week \u2013 the opening round of the five-team round-robin was Cork\u2019s \u2018bye week\u2019. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Newtownshandrum native Mulcahy accepts that there is an element of the unknown before the step up to competitive action but he has been pleased with how preparations have gone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cA hundred percent,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe\u2019ve had a number of challenge games over the last couple of months and we\u2019ve learned a nice bit from those and we\u2019re building away within the group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cBut, you\u2019re never fully sure until the championship starts. The lads are still only 16 or 17 \u2013 you\u2019re trying to build them up for the future and give them the tools that they might go on and represent Cork at U20 or senior, but at the end of the day, they\u2019re young lads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cYou don\u2019t know how they\u2019ll respond, but we feel we\u2019re in a good place anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/5034722_1_articleinlinemobile_EOHColmansSars07.jpg\" alt=\"Cork captain Eoin Considine of Sarsfields (left) will miss the Waterford clash. Picture: Eddie O&#8217;Hare<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Tadhg McCarthy of Watergrasshill will captain the side in Considine\u2019s absence while Sam Ring, who made an important contribution off the bench in last year\u2019s Munster final win over Waterford, also brings experience to the attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It\u2019s a tough opening for Cork in that the trip to Dungarvan is followed immediately by another away game against Tipperary. Mulcahy is hopeful that the injured pair will be back for that but, equally, he is putting his faith in those given opportunities as a result of the absences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe do have a couple of injuries, unfortunately,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cUnfortunately, Eoin Considine, who\u2019s our captain for this year, he won\u2019t be available on Friday night and, also, Callum Coffey is out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe two of those are experienced lads but it\u2019s a case of next man up and we have trust in the guys on our panel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe\u2019ll have to wait and see if they\u2019re back for the Tipp match \u2013 young fellas usually respond a bit quicker than us older lads! <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe\u2019d be hopeful that they\u2019d be close enough but they\u2019re out for this game, anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Paul Keane, who won Limerick SHC medals as a player with Adare and coached Doon to glory in 2024, is part of Mulcahy\u2019s set-up along with selectors John Kingston (Tracton), Peter Kelly (Erin\u2019s Own) and Jason Barrett (Carrigtwohill).<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">They now that the Waterford side, featuring four of those who saw game-time in last year\u2019s success, will be tough to beat, especially at home and with a win under their belts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Equally, it\u2019s a test that Cork are looking forward to.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/5012615_7_articleinlinemobile_3398346_1_.jpg\" alt=\"Cork minor hurling manager Donal Mulcahy. Picture: Tyler Miller\/Sportsfile<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cFrom our point of view, we know a little bit about them,\u201d Mulcahy says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe players are fairly familiar with each other from Dean Ryan and Harty. When you look at Waterford, they are a serious team and they had a good start, they won away to Limerick last Friday night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe saw that game ourselves and they\u2019re coached by Darragh O\u2019Sullivan and David Franks \u2013 those boys don\u2019t need any introduction, they\u2019ve had huge success with Ballygunner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThey\u2019re very well-drilled and if, you look at the team itself, they\u2019re very well-balanced.
