The Tibetan fox’s unbothered stare has sparked all manner of viral memes, from the heroic<\/a> to the judgmental<\/a>, but the internet wasn’t ready for the reality that cut the creature down to size.<\/p>\n

An X user shared<\/a> footage of a person encountering a Tibetan fox in the wild.<\/p>\n

Despite the brownish-red fox’s ferocious appearance, it became clear that the myth was greater than the legend, at least for those expecting it to be closer to the size of a wolf. “I was not prepared for it to be the size of a fat chihuahua,” Offshore Oddities<\/a> (@offshoreoddity) wrote.<\/p>\n

“That chubby Chihuahua \u2014 you’re absolutely right,” another agreed<\/a>. “I was surprised too.”<\/p>\n

In fact, the Tibetan fox’s typical weight is no more than 4 kilograms<\/a>, or 8.8 pounds \u2014 significantly smaller than the average raccoon, which weighs in at 15-40 pounds<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Other users couldn’t believe their eyes.<\/p>\n

“That must be a baby,” one person insisted<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“No, that’s an adult!” Offshore Oddities replied<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Huh??? No way. I thought it was WAY bigger!” someone else exclaimed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

While Tibetan foxes may not be what many imagine them to be, they play a critical role<\/a> in high-altitude areas of Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan, India, and China, according to Discover Wildlife<\/a>. As a keystone predator, they keep rodent populations in check and scavenge carcasses, helping to maintain ecological balance and limit disease spread.<\/p>\n

Another user suggested that the fox’s unrelenting stare was simply a reflection of a spirit larger than its frame. “Their appearance really does not give little guy vibes,” they said<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Others couldn’t get over its overwhelmingly adorable appearance.<\/p>\n

“Omg it’s so fat I love it,” one person raved<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Whdhshsh so cute,” another gushed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“It looks like a fake creature made out of parts from other animals and just smooshed them together,” a third wrote<\/a> with crying face and heart emojis.<\/p>\n
