(Facebook: Jeremy Rockliff)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Rockliff has held many roles in the parliament, from opposition backbencher to deputy premier and now premier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">While the job has never been kind, he said the COVID pandemic was a turning point.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Scrutiny has intensified and that social media aspect has also intensified, and had I not been involved for so long, I probably would have found my wellbeing impacted quite considerably,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Social media is flooded with comments focused not on the Premier&#8217;s decisions, but on him as a person. Some are downright violent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I ignore it and don&#8217;t look at it. That&#8217;s how I manage it,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-08-31\/tas-parliamentary-culture-reform-not-easy-ruth-forrest\/101387340\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fixing Tasmania&#8217;s parliament culture &#8216;not the job of politicians&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A female Tasmanian politician says she knows all too well the toxic culture with the parliament\u00a0laid bare in a damning new report, having had her own run-in with a government minister.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But while he is not worried for himself, Mr Rockliff is concerned that the vitriol online will deter others from politics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He acknowledges the culture within parliament is also an issue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s just too easy now to attack people personally, and that diminishes debate. It&#8217;s not good for democracy, and that would dissuade people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s important that all members of parliament reflect on that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Those attacks are not confined to the chamber.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The parties, particularly the two major parties, issue media releases labelling individual MPs things like &#8220;weak&#8221;, &#8220;liar&#8221; and &#8220;wrecker&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Rockliff said people on social media &#8220;feed off&#8221; those sorts of comments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;All the crap that people write in media releases \u2026 it&#8217;s just ridiculous,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;MPs sometimes deserve that criticism, of course, but no one deserves a full-throated, deeply personal attack.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man in a suit talks in parliament\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/3341674b03850c9be2fadbc58f00f3fa.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Jeremy Rockliff says it is not in his nature to be aggressive in parliament. (Facebook: Ella Haddad)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Labor MP Ella Haddad believes people still expect politicians to have a &#8220;really thick skin and portray strength at all times&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;If they show any signs of vulnerability [there&#8217;s a perception] they&#8217;re a weak target for their opponents and someone that the community can&#8217;t rely on,&#8221; Ms Haddad said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Sharing personal stories publicly can be particularly daunting because they can be &#8220;weaponised and used against you&#8221;, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There&#8217;ll be people questioning your fitness for office if you admit that you have had or are having any kind of issues around mental health.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Despite this, she has chosen to share her own mental health battles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;At the end of 2024 and into 2025, I was pretty unwell,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I was still able to come to work each day, go to parliament each day, but outside of that I was not doing well at all, and I did need to seek professional help.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Most people didn&#8217;t know what was going on in my life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;But those close to me did, and some people in parliament did, and I was really quite encouraged by how many people from across parliament would just call every now and again and check how I was going.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ella Haddad wearing a pro-trans t-shirt.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/a305b74c3a7d2390536b9833f06b9d7d.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Ella Haddad says she as encouraged by the people from across the parliament who checked in with her. (Facebook: Ella Haddad)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Haddad said she is doing OK now and feels the experience has made her stronger in the long term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Her mental health struggles were not work-related, but in her time as an MP, she, like many other politicians, has had to deal with social media abuse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;People would probably say, &#8216;oh, well, you put yourself out there, you deserve to get whatever&#8217;s coming your way,'&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;But a lot of times, as anyone would see on the internet, the comments that people make are often really very vulgar and expletive-laden and often really personal and unnecessarily hurtful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t think that adds to the political debate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-09-07\/after-brittany-higgins-rape-parliament-culture-improve\/104321030\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Has parliament&#8217;s culture really improved?<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Parliament is considering new laws to penalise bad behaviour inside the nation&#8217;s seat of power. But how much has changed since Brittany Higgins&#8217;s allegation of rape three years ago forced an upheaval?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">While all politicians are potential targets of online abuse, the abuse faced by women can be more overtly gendered or sexual.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We do get more comments about our bodies, our hair, our clothing, our families, I think, than some of our male counterparts do,&#8221; Ms Haddad said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">While Mr Rockliff is able to distance himself from social media, many MPs manage their own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;People assume that we&#8217;re not human, that we&#8217;re not real, that we&#8217;re not seeing the letters that come into our offices, the emails that are coming into our offices, the comments on social media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;But, for the most part, particularly in opposition, where our resourcing is really low, it is actually just us on our couches at 11 at night responding to things.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She said it was important that people with existing mental health conditions feel safe to run for politics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;What parliament needs is people of all kinds of experiences \u2026 ultimately, that is what will lead to better decision making.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We need to make it safe&#8217;: Forrest<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman stands outside a shop building.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/3dbd4df8b27b2a11bf828a5ed13b096d.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Ruth Forrest is concerned by the study&#8217;s findings. (Facebook: Ruth Forrest)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Social media has created another platform for politicians to be bullied and harassed, but Ms Forrest said it was not the only issue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Some of the behaviour you see within our council chambers, within our parliament, where in \u2026 most other workplaces, you would not accept that sort of behaviour,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Forrest said the requirement for politicians to be always available and responding to questions adds extra pressure, &#8220;particularly when you&#8217;re trying to deal with family and other life commitments as well, like everyone has&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-03-21\/local-government-toxic-culture-and-turmoil-tasmania\/100925076\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Who would want to be in local government?<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Councils in Tasmania have been in the spotlight for the wrong reasons in recent years but some think it&#8217;s now deterring potential candidates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She said there was no place for aggression in parliament, and it can take a significant toll on someone who was already struggling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She gives an example of an MP who may have a family crisis going on, then &#8220;suddenly someone has a crack at them on the floor of parliament&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Then that person is tipped over the edge, not really because of what that person said, but because of the compounding effect of all the things they&#8217;re dealing with.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;In a normal workplace, you probably take a day off.
