But its use\u00a0as an herbal supplement and in teas and drinks has risen in popularity in the United States in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>Kava bars and coffee shops that mix the extract into drinks, often offered as an alternative to alcohol, have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wusf.org\/health-news-florida\/2025-10-24\/i-started-drinking-less-and-less-kava-popularity-grows-in-florida-as-alcohol-alternative\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sprung up<\/a> in <a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/food\/drink\/old-city-kava-company-mocktails-kratom-20260220.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Philadelphia<\/a> and around the <a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.purewow.com\/wellness\/kava-bar-near-me\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">country<\/a>. Kava drinks, pills, extracts and other products are widely available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Best-Sellers-Kava-Kava-Herbal-Supplements\/zgbs\/hpc\/3766101\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">online<\/a>, marketed as inducing calm and improved mood.<\/p>\n<p>MORE:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillyvoice.com\/medical-scans-wait-times-mri-ct-ultrasound\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wait times for medical imaging results have doubled amid a radiologist shortage<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Decades ago, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration<a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/wayback.archive-it.org\/7993\/20171114232640\/https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/Food\/RecallsOutbreaksEmergencies\/SafetyAlertsAdvisories\/ucm085482.htm\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0warned<\/a>\u00a0about potential liver damage resulting from the use of kava supplements, which are unregulated in the United States. But a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that calls to poison control centers for health problems related to kava have increased significantly in recent years.\n<\/p>\n<p>Such calls dipped sharply after the FDA&#8217;s 2002 warning. But they have risen steadily since 2011, particularly among men 20 and older, according to the CDC&#8217;s latest\u00a0<a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/75\/wr\/mm7512a1.htm?s_cid=OS_mm7512a1_w\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&#8220;We are now experiencing an increase in calls again as new kava products enter the market, including products mixed with other substances such as kratom that can cause adverse interactions,&#8221; <a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1122400\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> Dr. Chris Holstege, director of the University of Virginia Health&#8217;s Blue Ridge Poison Center, who co-authored the study.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nPoison centers received 57 kava-related calls in 2011, compared to 203 in 2025. The combined use of kava and kratom accounted for 30% of the calls, the report says.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2020-06\/Kratom-2020_0.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kratom<\/a>, derived from a tree indigenous to Southeast Asia, has been increasingly sold in products in the United States \u2013 often in the synthetic form 7-OH, sometimes referred to as &#8220;gas station heroin.&#8221; At low doses, kratom acts as a stimulant, with more sedative effects at higher doses. It has been <a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/public-health-focus\/fda-and-kratom\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> to cause opioid-like withdrawal, anxiety and depression among regular users.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe <a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/nida.nih.gov\/research-topics\/kratom#addictive-withdrawal\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Institute on Drug Abuse<\/a> notes that some people are using kratom to manage withdrawal from opioids and to treat pain and other health issues \u2013 and that more research is needed to evaluate kratom&#8217;s potential medical benefits.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe active compounds in kava can help reduce symptoms of anxiety, but kava products in the United States can be as much as 10 times stronger than traditional versions. <a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK548637\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dangers<\/a> include rapid heartbeat, dizziness, vomiting and potential liver damage.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nNeither kava or kratom are <a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/drug-information\/drug-scheduling\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">scheduled drugs<\/a>\u00a0under the Controlled Substances Act, but the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency has listed kratom as a <a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2020-06\/Kratom-2020_0.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">drug of concern<\/a>.
