My 5-year-old tells people his mom works in \u201cpublic relationships.\u201d He has no idea what that means (I work in corporate communications). When I ask him what he wants to be, he says, \u201ca bone doctor.\u201d The other top two options are superhero or painter.<\/p>\n
I love that he thinks you pick a thing, learn it, and become it. I\u2019m not ready to tell him it\u2019s more complicated than that.<\/p>\n
Because the answer that I was raised to believe in\u2014\u201cwork hard\u201d\u2014is incomplete. Hard work alone doesn\u2019t win, and I\u2019m not sure it ever did. Especially now, in the age of artificial intelligence, what wins is working smarter\u2014letting go of what you think you know about the best way to work and building skills that compound instead of expire.<\/p>\n
In other words, you may think the biggest threat to your career right now is artificial intelligence. It\u2019s not. It\u2019s that nobody is making you reckon with it.<\/p>\n
I know this because my boss did make me reckon with AI, and it\u2019s the best thing that\u2019s happened to me in my career.
