{"id":391037,"date":"2026-04-10T04:23:16","date_gmt":"2026-04-10T04:23:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/391037\/"},"modified":"2026-04-10T04:23:16","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T04:23:16","slug":"officials-confirm-cork-should-have-had-50-metre-advancement-on-late-free-against-meath","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/391037\/","title":{"rendered":"Officials confirm Cork should have had 50-metre advancement on late free against Meath"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\">Referees and GAA rules officials have confirmed that Cork should have been awarded a 50\u2011metre advancement on a late free during their Allianz Division 2 Football League final defeat to Meath at Croke Park last Sunday week, according to Colm Keys of The Irish Independent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The incident was discussed at a pre\u2011championship referees\u2019 seminar, where officials reviewed the closing stages of the game, which Meath won on a scoreline of 1-22 to 2-17.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In the dying seconds, Meath\u2019s James Conlon pulled down Cork defender Maurice Shanley as Cork attempted to launch one last attack given they trailed by two points. The foul occurred deep in Cork\u2019s half, but officials agreed that the free should have been moved forward under the rule dealing with cynical or disruptive fouls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Had the free been advanced, Cork would have restarted play from a far more realistic scoring position with a two-pointer possible. Instead, the original mark left them too far back to create a meaningful final opportunity before the hooter sounded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Cork manager John Cleary was puzzled with the decision made by referee Brendan Griffin of Kerry when speaking to the media after the narrow loss to the Royals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe got a free when Maurice Shanley was tripped right at the end,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/5013788_47_articleinlinemobile_3391638.jpg\" alt=\"Cork manager John Cleary. He gave the Meath player a black card, and yet the free was still in our own half with 25 seconds left. That\u2019s a big advantage for the team that\u2019s ahead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cLike, what else would you do? You\u2019d just keep fouling. And that\u2019s what\u2019s happening. If you\u2019re a point up with 40 seconds left, you\u2019re going to keep fouling, because to me, after we got the free, it should have been brought up 50 metres.
