{"id":391346,"date":"2026-04-10T08:59:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-10T08:59:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/391346\/"},"modified":"2026-04-10T08:59:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T08:59:09","slug":"is-the-toilet-the-most-important-piece-of-equipment-aboard-the-artemis-ii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/391346\/","title":{"rendered":"Is the toilet the &#8216;most important piece of equipment&#8217; aboard the Artemis II?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">When we sent four humans 406,771 kilometres into space for the first time, we also sent a toilet with them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">After all, if the plan is to go farther and farther, then it\u2019s critical we test one of the non-negotiable parts of being human.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The saga of the Artemis II&#8217;s toilet \u2014 known officially as the Universal Waste Management System \u2014 is a dramedy, unfolding in multiple acts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Post-launch\u00a0troubles<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The incredible launch of Artemis II on April 1 was nail-biting for people on Earth, but the crew had to immediately get to work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Mission specialist Christina Koch reported an issue with the toilet about an hour after launch. After a brief communications hiccup, mission control responded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWe are postulating that the oxone beads came loose and went in and jammed the fan separator,\u201d said Stan Love, NASA astronaut and the crew\u2019s touchpoint at mission control at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWe might be able to get in there and clear it,&#8221; Love said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The fix took a few hours of troubleshooting, with Koch having to essentially reboot the toilet, but to the crew\u2019s relief: it worked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI&#8217;m proud to call myself the space plumber,\u201d Koch later told the media. \u201cI like to say that it is probably the most important piece of equipment on board.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">NASA officials later clarified the issue was likely the system automatically shutting off because the pump wasn\u2019t primed with enough water, a hiccup they described as par for the course.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWe&#8217;ve got real humans in there,\u201d said Lori Glaze, deputy associate administrator for NASA&#8217;s Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/j3Pq35gm4qA?si=KiZ2vRARST7IgwBY&amp;t=1465\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:at an April 2 news conference;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;at an April 2 news conference&quot;}\" class=\"link \">at an April 2 news conference<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThey&#8217;re trying to live and learn,&#8221; Glaze said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8216;A complex engineering issue&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asc-csa.gc.ca\/eng\/multimedia\/search\/video\/19682?type=2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:UWMS, which;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;UWMS, which&quot;}\" class=\"link \">UWMS, which <\/a>is located inside a small closet on the floor of the Orion capsule,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.asc-csa.gc.ca\/eng\/multimedia\/search\/video\/19682?type=2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:differs in a few ways;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;differs in a few ways&quot;}\" class=\"link \"> differs in a few ways <\/a>from a regular toilet owing to the lack of gravity.\u00a0For instance, fecal matter is sucked down into a bag that\u2019s sealed and then stored under the floor of the toilet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Meanwhile, for urine, each astronaut has their own hose that uses some airflow to pull the liquid into storage.\u00a0The urine is vented several times a day into space, in an impressive frozen stream. The solution ended up being a rotation of the Orion capsule so that sunlight could hit the vents \u2014 melting the frozen wastewater.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt&#8217;s kind of a complex engineering issue when you expose a liquid to a vacuum. It&#8217;s a pretty chaotic environment,\u201d said Rick Henfling, Artemis II\u2019s entry flight director, during a media briefing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The hygiene bay mystery<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Meanwhile, inside the capsule, the crew noticed a strange smell emanating from their \u201cbathroom.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cFor me, it was some sort of burning odour,\u201d reported mission specialist and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen during a chat with mission control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt was definitely in the hygiene bay. And when I opened up the hygiene bay, the rest of the crew could smell it pretty much immediately,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">When NASA looked into it, they ruled out the heaters near the hygiene bay and the use of the toilet itself. (NASA)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Urinating still a tricky business<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">From that point, things seemed to be working well until the venting problem reared its head again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWe just want to let you know that right now, [the] toilet is no-go for use,\u201d said Jenni Gibbons, delivering the bad news to the crew from Houston on Day 5.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The backup plan for the crew is Collapsible Contingency Urinals, which are essentially long tubes that astronauts use to store urine that can also be vented, provided that system is working. There&#8217;s going to be things that don&#8217;t work,\u201d said John Moores, an associate professor of Earth and space science and engineering at York University and co-host of the Popcorn Science podcast. He says this interplay of systems involving fluids, mechanical and electrical components is one of the more complicated ones on the spacecraft.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The hope \u2014 fitting the entire Artemis II mission\u2019s purpose \u2014 is that future crews will have the bathroom kinks worked out.
