{"id":391358,"date":"2026-04-10T09:14:13","date_gmt":"2026-04-10T09:14:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/391358\/"},"modified":"2026-04-10T09:14:13","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T09:14:13","slug":"judges-raise-questions-about-four-year-jail-sentence-given-to-sean-diddy-combs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/391358\/","title":{"rendered":"Judges raise questions about four-year jail sentence given to Sean \u2018Diddy\u2019 Combs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Federal appeals court judges in the US have questioned during oral arguments whether a roughly four-year prison term given to Sean \u201cDiddy\u201d Combs for the hip-hop mogul\u2019s conviction on prostitution-related charges was too harsh.<\/p>\n<p>The three-judge panel of the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan did not immediately rule after hearing two hours of arguments.<\/p>\n<p>At the conclusion, Circuit Judge William J Nardini called it an \u201cexceptionally difficult case\u201d that raises questions of first impression \u201cnot only for this court but for any federal court in the country\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the arguments, judges questioned whether a judge improperly considered elements of acquitted charges to sentence Combs to what his lawyer, Alexandra Shapiro, said was the most prison time ever given to someone convicted of the same charges with a similar criminal history.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant US attorney Christy Slavik, arguing for the government, challenged Ms Shapiro\u2019s claim, saying the four-year, two-month prison term given to Combs was below what federal sentencing guidelines called for and was in line with similar convictions in the 2nd Circuit.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"924\" width=\"640\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/judges-raise-questions-about-four-year-jail-sentence-given-to-sean-diddy-combs.jpg\" alt=\"Sean Combs\" data-title=\"The MET Gala 2018 \u2013 New York\" data-copyright-holder=\"PA Archive\" data-copyright-notice=\"PA Archive\/PA Images\" data-credit=\"Ian West\" data-usage-terms=\"\"\/>Sean Combs is scheduled for release in April 2028 (PA)\n<\/p>\n<p>Combs, currently in federal prison in New Jersey, is challenging his conviction and prison sentence. He was convicted last July under the federal Mann Act, which bans transporting people across state lines for any sexual crime.<\/p>\n<p>But he was acquitted of sex trafficking and racketeering charges that carried the potential for a life sentence.<\/p>\n<p>In sentencing Combs, Judge Arun Subramanian said: \u201cMr Combs, you\u2019re being sentenced for the offences of conviction, not the crimes he was acquitted of. However, under law, the court \u2018shall consider\u2019 the nature of the offence and characteristics of the defendant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The judge also cited law which states that no limitation shall be placed on the \u201cbackground, character and conduct\u201d that a judge can consider.<\/p>\n<p>During Thursday\u2019s arguments, Ms Shapiro asked the appeals panel for a speedy decision.<\/p>\n<p>Combs, 56, has been behind bars since his September 2024 arrest.
