The memory of that day sparked a smile from actor Jane Kaczmarek, who played no-nonsense mother Lois on the show.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe youngest son in the show, Dewey, who didn\u2019t want to graduate from high school, blew up the sewers,\u201d said Kaczmarek recently, referencing her former co-star Erik Per Sullivan, as she sat in the spacious backyard of her Pasadena home. \u201cSo all of us were covered in this substance and we were absolutely filthy!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The messy shenanigans marked a fitting conclusion to the series that premiered in 2000 about a comically dysfunctional family and which became one of Fox\u2019s signature hits during its seven-season run. The outrageous antics revolving around the experiences of fretful teen prodigy Malcolm were always anchored by his family\u2019s tight bond.<\/p>\n<p>After the cameras stopped rolling and the brown \u201csewage\u201d was washed off, \u201cwe all started crying and holding each other as we said goodbye,\u201d Kaczmarek recalled.<\/p>\n<p>The cast members went their distinctly separate ways. Bryan Cranston transitioned from befuddled dad Hal to lethal drug lord Walter White in \u201cBreaking Bad.\u201d Frankie Muniz, who played Malcolm, pursued professional race car driving. Kaczmarek focused on her family and three children. (David Bukach\/Disney) <\/p>\n<p>But two decades after that final comic bow, the wackiness of \u201cMalcolm\u201d is making a comeback, as the show\u2019s ensemble reunites for a four-episode revival, \u201cMalcolm in the Middle: Life\u2019s Still Unfair,\u201d premiering Friday on Hulu. <\/p>\n<p>The new project reveals that Malcolm has become a single father with a teenage daughter, Leah (Keeley Karsten), and is working in computer systems assisting food banks. To protect his sanity, he has kept away from his family for more than a decade. <\/p>\n<p>While Hal and Lois are excited as they prepare to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary, their joy is derailed when they finally confront Malcolm. The shock increases when they learn they have a granddaughter. Mayhem ensues.<\/p>\n<p>Kaczmarek beamed as she talked about getting back together with her former co-stars: \u201cI always thought that show was like lightning in a bottle. \u2018Malcolm\u2019 was a mega-hit and a dream come true. So getting together with everyone again was just wonderful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked about the best part of the project, she quickly responded, \u201cDancing with Bryan. Replacing him as the older Dewey is Caleb Ellsworth-Clark.<\/p>\n<p>Boomer said the key force pushing for a \u201cMalcolm\u201d revival was Cranston. \u201cBryan came to me while he was in the middle of \u2018Breaking Bad.\u2019 It was incredible. He\u2019s got a dump truck full of Emmys, and he\u2019s trying to line up something for \u2018Malcolm,\u2019 \u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>Cranston confirmed that assertion in a separate interview.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would describe it as being the irritant in Linwood\u2019s underwear,\u201d said Cranston, who is also an executive producer. \u201cI kept poking him every year and a half about how we should do this. So many things were left open. Malcolm was going off to college, Lois had gotten pregnant. It really did merit some kind of reexamination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaczmarek said that Cranston was relentless: \u201cHe would tell me, \u2018I really want to get us back together again.\u2019 I told him, \u2018I think you\u2019re just tired of murdering people on \u2018Breaking Bad.\u2019 The bottom line was he just wanted to be Hal again and have fun.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>But Boomer was resistant, saying they had already filmed 151 episodes of the show and he didn\u2019t have anything else to say. \u201cBut then Tracy came up with this idea: What if Malcolm had a daughter who was completely like him, the same personality and impulsiveness? He was particularly upbeat about working with Kaczmarek: \u201cWhen I saw Jane, it was like I was with my mom again and no time had passed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Muniz and Kaczmarek were the breakout stars of the original series, featured in numerous profiles and magazine articles. Their popularity overshadowed Cranston\u2018s. Kaczmarkek, who <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-2001-aug-19-ca-35737-story.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">at the time<\/a> called her TV husband \u201cthe heart and soul\u201d of \u201cMalcolm,\u201d called the imbalance \u201cterribly uncomfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Cranston, whose role as the antihero Walter in \u201cBreaking Bad\u201d launched a meteoric rise to major stardom, accepted the situation at the time with grace. \u201cWhen I see Jane and I know what this has done for her, all I feel is happiness,\u201d he said in a 2001 interview. \u201cI\u2019m thrilled to death for Frankie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before \u201cMalcolm,\u201d Kaczmarek was a veteran of several TV series, including \u201cHill Street Blues,\u201d \u201cFrasier,\u201d \u201cThe Paper Chase\u201d and \u201cCybill.\u201d She played Robert DeNiro\u2018s wife in \u201cFalling in Love,\u201d and appeared in the films \u201cD.O.A.,\u201d \u201cPleasantville\u201d and \u201cThe Chamber.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her portrayal of the strict disciplinarian Lois established her as a distinctive member of prominent TV mothers who included June Lockhart (\u201cLassie\u201d and \u201cLost in Space\u201d), Barbara Billingsley (\u201cLeave It to Beaver\u201d), Phylicia Rashad (\u201cThe Cosby Show\u201d) and Roseanne Barr (\u201cRoseanne\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"A woman standing at the edge of a pond with her arms crossed.\"   width=\"2000\" height=\"1334\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1775830703_279_.jpeg\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>         <\/p>\n<p>As the strict disciplinarian Lois, Jane Kazmarek established herself as a distinctive member of prominent TV mothers.<\/p>\n<p>(Ian Spanier \/ For The Times)<\/p>\n<p>Her take-no-prisoners portrayal of Lois quickly became a defining career highlight. \u201cThose kids had to be really clever to get one over on eagle-eyed Lois,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She added that the character was always dear to her, as was her parenting style. \u201cI never did anything on the show that I would not have done in real life,\u201d she said. \u201d \u2018No\u2019 is a complete sentence, and parents should tell their kids that more frequently. On \u2018Malcolm,\u2019 it was a dysfunctional family. But it was also highly functional. We had dinner together every night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her goals were clear after the series ended. Her three children were born during the run of the show, and she wanted to devote time to them. She moved to Pasadena and became involved in community work and charities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving a family and kids was always important to me, and I missed that home life,\u201d she said, noting that she was married at the time to Bradley Whitford, who had a major role on \u201cThe West Wing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was very happy for a long time, and then different priorities took over.\u201d Their divorce was finalized in 2010 after a 17-year marriage.<\/p>\n<p>Now that her children are grown, Kaczmarek has recently entered a new phase of life, newly married to her high school sweetheart, with whom she reconnected during their 50th high school reunion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m 70 years old and I\u2019m madly in love with my husband, who\u2019s in Wisconsin,\u201d she said, noting she splits her time between the two places. \u201cHe loves being here and I love being there. I don\u2019t want to be away from him. I want to read, I want to watch Green Bay Packer games. I have a lot of family there, and I really want to enjoy my life.
