He missed the green on the par three, fourth, found sand and then watched his par putt slide by the right edge of the hole for bogey. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Back to back birdies for MacIntyre (+8) as he returns to the number the started the day on after the double at the par five, second. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Rai (-2) with a birdie on the par five, eighth. The Englishman is hanging tough. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Koepka (-2) on the charge with his third birdie in four holes after dropping a shot at the first. Pours in a 15-foot putt. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Scheffler (-2) had birdies chances on the second and third but can\u2019t avail of either opportunity. Woodland (level) gets a shot back on three. MacIntyre (+9) picks up a birdie on three. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Rahm (+4) went birdie free yesterday but has picked up two shots in the first five holes today. <\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Two pretty historic records at stake this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>1. He whiffed his second shot way right, didn\u2019t have a shot to make the green through the trees, chunked the next into a bunker and then took two putts. Rose (-1) watches his birdie put from seven feet drift past the hole. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Clark (-2) makes his first bogey of the round on the treacherous par four, 10th. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Brooks Koepka (-1) made up for a bogey on the first with two quick birdies at two and three. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Scheffler (-2) and Gary Woodland (-1) had a decent look at birdie at the first but neither could convert. It\u2019s probably taking all of what\u2019s left of MacIntyre\u2019s (+10) self control not to eat the grip on his putter. The two-time Masters champion and world number one Scottie Scheffler is about to tee off for round two. So too Bob MacIntyre. Can we have an under\/over on swear words?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Former Masters\u2019 champions Jordan Spieth (-1) birdies the first, Sergio Garcia (+1) bogeys the third. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Clark (-3) doesn\u2019t manage to pick up anything at the par five eighth. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Jon Rahm (+6) starts with a par. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">McKibbin (+7) makes a welcome birdie on the par five, eighth. There are very few players under par for their second rounds, Clarke (-3) a noteworthy exception. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Scottie will be teeing off shortly. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Jacob Bridgeman (-1) on his Masters\u2019 debut has picked up an early birdie. Earlier this year, he earned his first career PGA Tour win in Los Angeles and finished T-4 in Honolulu, T-5 in the Players Championship and T-8 in Pebble Beach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">England\u2019s Aaron Rai (-2) is making his second Masters start. In November, he won in Abu Dhabi to earn his third career DP World Tour win and add to his victories in the 2018 Hong Kong Open and 2020 Scottish Open. Other high finishes in 2025 included T-3 in the DP World Tour\u2019s flagship event in England, T-4 in the Mexico Open and T-5 in Greensboro.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">He\u2019s birdied the par five, second to move to three behind the leaders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">McKibbin (+8) has dropped a further two shots at four and five. That\u2019s five shots gone in his six holes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Clark (-3) makes it three birdies in four holes. The American is two behind McIlroy and Burns. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Wyndham Clark (-2), the 2023 US Open champion has started with a bang, two birdies in the first three holes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">McKibbin (+6) suffered a horror show on the par five, second, making a double bogey after striping his drive 326 yards down the centre of the fairway. There was definitely a penalty drop in there somewhere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">We like to call this section, THEY SAID IT.<\/p>\n<p>Rory McIlroy, On How He Felt About His First Round<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">\u201cI\u2019ll probably go to the Champions Locker Room right now and have a little drink, put my Green Jacket on and then call it a day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Such is life when you are the defending Masters champion and open with 5-under 67.<\/p>\n<p>Sam Burns, On His Play on the Par 5s<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">\u201cI think, historically, people who have success here play the par 5s really well, and we were able to do that today. So it\u2019s a good recipe around this golf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Burns eagled the second and birdied Nos. 8, 13 and 15 on his way to a 5-under 67.<\/p>\n<p>Jack Nicklaus, On Being an Honorary Starter<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">\u201cIt\u2019s such a nice ceremony, and it\u2019s a real honor to be invited. I hope to be able to do it as long as I can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Nicklaus was joined on the first tee by Gary Player and Tom Watson to officially open the 2026 Masters.<\/p>\n<p>Justin Rose, On Leader Board Watching<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">\u201cI think the lead at this point is irrelevant. I think there\u2019s so much golf ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">For the record, Rose is two behind McIlroy and Burns.<\/p>\n<p>Shane Lowry, On His Eagle at No. 13<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">\u201cTo be honest, it\u2019s been a number that I\u2019m not overly comfortable with \u2013 or I haven\u2019t been. I did work on it a lot over the last two weeks. It was nice to pull it off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Lowry laid up to 99 yards on the risk-reward par-5, then holed a wedge.<\/p>\n<p>Jose Maria Olazabal, On His Hot Start<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">\u201cEverybody was in shock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Olazabal played his way onto the leader board early in the day, going 2-under through 14 holes. He finished with a 2-over 74.<\/p>\n<p>Xander Schauffele, On Hitting a Ball Into a Patron Shopping Bag<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">\u201cIt just flew straight into the bag. It was a great break. That bounce would\u2019ve put me in the pine straw and who knows if I would\u2019ve had a shot to hit up the hill. So thanks to the lady on No. 8.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Schauffele\u2019s ball had to be dug out of the patron\u2019s bag. He made par on No. 8 on his way to 2-under 70.<\/p>\n<p>Mason Howell, On Playing With Rory McIlroy<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">\u201cI\u00a0definitely could learn a lot from how he played today. When he was in trouble, he took his medicine. Then he was able to go up there and make a lot of putts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">McIlroy, the defending champion, opened with 5-under 67; Howell shot 5-over 77.<\/p>\n<p>Collin Morikawa, On His Ailing Back<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">\u201cHonestly, it\u2019s probably the toughest round I\u2019ve ever played. I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve been able to get comfortable out there and trust the entire body. It\u2019s not painful, but it\u2019s not easy. I think walking has been the hardest part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Morikawa, who withdrew from The Players Championship last month after one hole because of a back injury he sustained while taking a practice swing, posted a 2-over 74.<\/p>\n<p>Jon Rahm, On a Tough Start<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">\u201cTomorrow is a new day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Rahm, the 2023 champion, opened with 6-over 78, his highest score in 37 rounds at the Masters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Only because you asked nicely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Tom McKibbin (+4) has bogeyed the first. We will keep on eye on his progress. No of the early starters are upwardly mobile at this point. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Now if you thought Bryson was a little chippy, Bob MacIntyre responded with \u2018hold my coat,\u2019 for much of his round. He was incandescent at times, burying a club in a fairway in frustration, de-greening a putt and introducing a few new swear words to the Augusta patrons. He\u2019ll be mad at himself for letting his frustration get the better of him but let\u2019s keep things in perspective. he\u2019s hardly the first person to utter an expletive on a golf course. Let he who has not sinned cast the first stone. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">McIntyre had given an interview to Martin Dempster of the Scotsman in the build-up to the Masters unapologetic in tone, as he was picked up on a mic swearing during last week\u2019s Valero Texas Open. He said: \u201cI know I am volatile and I know the bad language and stuff, but that\u2019s just me, ahead of his fourth appearance at the Georgia venue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">MacIntyre added: \u201cEven having a little one myself and knowing there are little ones around, I\u2019m not going to change.\u201d He certainly stayed true to his word. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Bryson DeChambeau (76) wasn\u2019t at his effusive best in the post round chat. <\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">After an opening round 4-over par 76 Bryson DeChambeau was about as livid as I&#8217;ve ever seen post round. John O\u2019Sullivan here and along with David Gorman later we\u2019ll be taking you through all the action from Augusta National. Day one went very well from an Irish perspective. Rory McIlroy, the defending champion, shot a five under, 67 but that doesn\u2019t convey the full extent of an eventful round.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">He spent a fair amount of time walking from the teeing ground into the Augusta pine trees, and by the end of his round, provided several feats of escapology that might have had Harry Houdini scratching his head. Seve Ballesteros would have been impressed. And he was a man who knew about playing from the trees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Shane Lowry started at a gallop, strained a fetlock on the two par threes on the front nine, where he coughed up three shots, accelerated again at the turn, holed a wedge for eagle on the 13th, before eventually signing for a colourful, two under regulation figures, 70.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Tom McKibbin lost his way a little down the stretch, three bogeys in the last four holes, saw him sign for a 75.
