\n The commissioned work by artist David Booth is now on public display, celebrating the actor\u2019s extensive career in film and television.\n <\/p>\n

A portrait of acclaimed actor and producer Ruth Negga, who was raised in Limerick, has been unveiled at the National Gallery of Ireland.<\/p>\n

The work, titled “Ruth,” was painted by Dublin-based artist David Booth, the winner of the National Gallery’s Portrait Prize in 2022.<\/p>\n

Negga was born in Addis Ababa and raised in Limerick, where she attended Scoil Carmel before studying at Trinity College Dublin.<\/p>\n

She is known for her critically acclaimed performances in films like Loving, for which she received an Oscar nomination in 2017, and her recent Emmy-nominated role in the television series Presumed Innocent.<\/p>\n

Booth considered several settings for the portrait, including Trinity College and a coffee shop in Dublin.<\/p>\n

The pair ultimately chose the courtyard of the National Gallery of Ireland as the setting for the piece.<\/p>\n

According to the artist, his goal was for her gaze to confront the viewer directly, establishing a “powerful sense of presence and immediacy.”<\/p>\n

In a statement, Ruth Negga said it was an “absolute honour” to be the sitter for the portrait.<\/p>\n

She described the work as being infused with the artist’s own “grace, tenderness, and a sense of the mysterious.”<\/p>\n

The portrait is now on display to the public for free in the Portrait Gallery at the National Gallery of Ireland.<\/p>\n

A portrait of actor Stephen Rea by photographer David Stephenson was also unveiled at the same time.<\/p>\n
