{"id":392009,"date":"2026-04-10T18:22:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-10T18:22:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/392009\/"},"modified":"2026-04-10T18:22:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T18:22:11","slug":"matt-williams-slams-cynical-sale-sharks-who-lack-morality-and-decency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/392009\/","title":{"rendered":"Matt Williams slams &#8216;cynical&#8217; Sale Sharks who lack &#8216;morality and decency&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ex-Leinster boss and outspoken pundit Matt Williams wants his former side to demolish Sale Sharks after claiming they have disrespected the Investec Champions Cup.<\/p>\n<p>The two teams go head-to-head in the quarter-finals of the competition at the Aviva Stadium with the Irish province heavy favourites for the encounter.<\/p>\n<p>They are stacked with internationals and are regularly in contention for silverware, while their opponents have endured a difficult campaign in PREM Rugby and go into the clash without three of their key front-rowers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/team\/leinster\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Leinster<\/a> are therefore expected to move through comfortably into the last-four, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/tag\/matt-williams\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Williams<\/a> is particularly baying for blood this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>English clubs, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/team\/sale-sharks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sale<\/a>, have regularly fielded understrength squads following the change in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/tournament\/rugby-champions-cup\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Champions Cup<\/a> format and the Australian wants Alex Sanderson\u2019s men to pay the price for that.<\/p>\n<p>England clubs raise the \u2018white flag\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a pool match, Sale were trounced by Toulouse 77-7. There is nothing lucky about all those 7s for Sale. It was an utter humiliation and not just on the scoreboard,\u201d he wrote in his <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/rugby\/2026\/04\/10\/matt-williams-for-the-integrity-of-the-game-i-hope-leinster-smash-sale\/\" target=\"_blank\">Irish Times<\/a> column.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegrettably, in away pool stage games of the Champions Cup, many English clubs, including Sale, now run up the white flag and surrender these matches by selecting a second XV.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith only a 50 per cent winning ratio in the pool stages and a points differential of -38, it is a fact that under the old six game pool system, Sale would not have qualified for a quarter-final.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Williams described Sale as lacking \u201cmorality, decency and respect for the game\u201d and slammed their attitude to arguably the toughest club competition in the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile clubs that select weakened teams for away matches deserve the beltings they get, from a personal perspective, as someone who deeply enjoyed and respected the significant challenges of the old Heineken Cup, I hope Leinster smash Sale,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot because I am pro Leinster, but because the actions of clubs like Sale show they do not care about their opponents\u2019 finances, the away supporters or the integrity of the Champions Cup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is an old saying in rugby that if you disrespect your opponent, you are inviting disappointment into your life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope after full time at the Aviva, the away dressing room is filled with deep and bitter disappointment. Yet year after year, Leinster are close to the top,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite all of this unquestionable success, the non-Leinster supporters inside Ireland take great small-minded joy when Leinster are defeated in a Champions Cup or a URC play-off.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ignorant still argue that in winning last season\u2019s URC Final and reaching the semi-finals of the Champions Cup, Leinster somehow failed.
