Shoppers at a busy supermarket in Co Cork had to contend with an intoxicated man who was lying asleep on the ground in the entrance before he was arrested and removed by garda\u00ed, the district court has heard.<\/p>\n
Sergeant Eimear O\u2019Connell told Macroom District Court that garda\u00ed were called to SuperValu in Macroom on October 8, 2025, where they found a man identified as Jeremiah Twomey, aged 63, of Graigue, Inchigeelagh, Co Cork, lying on the floor by the entrance.<\/p>\n
The court heard that Twomey was highly intoxicated and was arrested for his own safety and the safety of others.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He was taken to Macroom Garda Station and charged with being intoxicated in a public place contrary to Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Public Order Act, 1994. He pleaded guilty to the charge.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The court heard that Twomey had four previous convictions, two of which were for the same offence.<\/p>\n
\u00a0Patrick Goold, defending, said his client was an alcoholic who had left the family home due to his addiction issues and was staying with a neighbour.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He said Twomey had made \u201cseveral attempts to get off the drink\u201d but always seemed to relapse. He said that Twomey was always co-operative and never aggressive.<\/p>\n
Judge Joanne Carroll said Twomey needed to try to address his problem.\u00a0<\/p>\n
She placed him on a probation bond for six months on condition that he attends alcohol addiction services as advised and also makes a \u20ac50 contribution to the court poor box.<\/p>\n
