We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p>A vulnerable child spent two months in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/ae\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A&amp;E<\/a> as nowhere could be found to give them appropiate care, it has been reported. <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/child\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">child,<\/a> who has complex <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/nhs-british-medical-association-health-secretary-wes-streeting-government-b2955468.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">behavioural disorders, spent more than 70 days in the A&amp;E department at <\/a>Queen\u2019s Hospital in Romford, east London, while another stayed in the department for more than 30 days.<\/p>\n<p>Both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/children\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">children<\/a> had been in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/nhs-wes-streeting-medics-kemi-badenoch-england-b2953538.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> council-arranged care, such as foster homes, but their placements <\/a>had broken down, with no one prepared to care for them.<\/p>\n<p>Barking, Havering, and Redbridge University <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/hospitals\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hospitals<\/a> Trust\u2019s chief executive, Matthew Trainer, told the Health Service Journal that the cases were among the longest waits the trust had seen. In 2022, The Independent revealed that the trust had a child wait 26 days in A&amp;E.<\/p>\n<p>He said hospitals were being used as a \u201cplace of safety\u201d for children and young people with mental health problems and challenging behavioural needs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis means several young people have experienced long waits for the right support in A&amp;E,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s unacceptable and distressing for both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/patients\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">patients<\/a> and our staff, and something we\u2019ve been discussing for several years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The trust\u2019s board papers also raised concerns over the length of time mental health patients are waiting in its A&amp;E.<\/p>\n<p>According to papers published in March, the trust spends \u00a36m each year on registered mental health nurses, additional health care assistants and security guards to look after those with mental health needs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey often wait too long in A&amp;E, before being transferred to a mental health provider where their needs can be properly addressed,\u201d the trust said.<\/p>\n<p>The local commissioner, North East London Integrated Care Board, warned that children with autism are the largest cohort being admitted to A&amp;E under a \u201cmental health diagnosis\u201d, which it said could be linked to pressures on local mental health services for children and adolescents and the growing number of children\u2019s care homes in Havering.<\/p>\n<p>Data for admissions showed the most common reasons for admissions to A&amp;E departments among children and young adults with mental health conditions are \u201cself-injurious behaviour, bizarre behaviour, anxiety, physical aggression and hallucinations\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The board said: \u201cA&amp;E departments are increasingly being seen as a place of last resort for children who may have complex mental health needs, neurodiversity and behaviours that challenge, and their residential placement has broken down. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is currently an out-of-area-care experienced young person who has spent over 50 days in a side room at Queen\u2019s Hospital A&amp;E department, following a breakdown of his placement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The latest NHS data for February shows 3,511 mental health patients, out of 38,517, waited more than 24 hours in A&amp;E across England. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Your support helps us to tell the story From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":393276,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[34],"tags":[103,397,396,61,60],"class_list":{"0":"post-393275","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-healthcare","8":"tag-health","9":"tag-health-care","10":"tag-healthcare","11":"tag-ie","12":"tag-ireland"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/393275","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=393275"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/393275\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/393276"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=393275"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=393275"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=393275"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
