{"id":393858,"date":"2026-04-11T22:11:12","date_gmt":"2026-04-11T22:11:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/393858\/"},"modified":"2026-04-11T22:11:12","modified_gmt":"2026-04-11T22:11:12","slug":"serious-hospital-environment-issues-found-in-more-than-half-of-inspections-watchdog-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/393858\/","title":{"rendered":"Serious hospital environment issues found in more than half of inspections \u2013 watchdog \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">More than half of hospitals inspected over the past two years had issues with ageing buildings or poor physical environments, affecting the safety of care provided to patients, an analysis of inspection reports has found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/health-information-and-quality-authority-hiqa\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/health-information-and-quality-authority-hiqa\/\">Health Information and Quality Authority<\/a> (Hiqa) regularly inspects health facilities to ensure its compliance with the national standards for safe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/healthcare\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/healthcare\/\">healthcare<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Of the 28 hospital inspection reports published over the past two years, the watchdog identified serious issues with the physical environment in 14 cases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A further six reports highlighted more minor concerns while eight had a physical environment that \u201csupported the delivery of high quality, safe, reliable care\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">St Teresa\u2019s ward in Cappagh Orthopaedic Hospital \u201cdid not fully support the delivery of high quality care\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This, the report said, was due to \u201cageing, outdated infrastructure; a lack of storage areas for equipment; hand-hygiene sinks that did not conform to recommended standards; a multi-occupancy room that was a thoroughfare for access to another room\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Two inspection reports into Naas General Hospital highlighted issues with the infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In the first report, conducted in September and published in December last, inspectors found investment was required \u201cto improve the infrastructure within the hospital and senior management has identified this requirement\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIn the interim, as found at the previous inspection, the physical environment does not fully support the delivery of high-quality, safe and reliable care,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/2026\/04\/02\/patient-safety-risks-identified-at-navan-hospital\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Patient safety risks identified at Navan HospitalOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It highlighted \u201climited\u201d isolation facilities, which it said \u201cposed a risk of transmission of communicable disease\u201d, the call-bell system was \u201cinadequate\u201d and the hospital did not always have adequate spacing between beds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The previous inspection, conducted in July 2024 and published in April 2025, found there were \u201crisks to patients as a result of the ageing infrastructure in Liffey Wards\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The physical infrastructure of Dublin\u2019s Rotunda Hospital has been under the microscope in recent months, when HSE chief clinical officer Dr Colm Henry described the building as \u201cnot fit for purpose\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Hiqa acknowledged the work of staff to  mitigate the risks the building posed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHowever, ongoing limitations in the physical environment continued to hinder the consistent delivery of private and confidential care,\u201d the most recent report, published earlier this month, found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Inspection reports also criticised University Maternity Hospital Limerick and the National Maternity Hospital, Dublin. The infrastructure and age of the Dublin building  \u201cpresented ongoing challenges in relation to infection prevention and control\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"> The infrastructure of Limerick\u2019s maternity hospital \u201cwas outdated and did not meet recommended specifications and international best practice standards for maternity services\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/2025\/01\/14\/overcrowding-at-beaumont-hospital-does-not-respect-patients-dignity-hiqa-report-finds\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Overcrowding at Beaumont Hospital does not respect patients\u2019 dignity, Hiqa report findsOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The watchdog was very critical of St Columcille\u2019s Hospital, stating clinical areas visited \u201cdid not fully support the delivery of high-quality, safe and reliable care that protects the health and welfare of patients\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe hospital\u2019s ageing infrastructure, and insufficient and inadequate isolation facilities were issues identified on previous inspections of the service in 2022 and 2024,\u201d the report said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cInfrastructural challenges observed on this inspection included multi-occupancy rooms in St Joseph\u2019s ward that did not have doors. Single rooms used as isolation facilities did not have en suite toilet or shower facilities.
