{"id":394207,"date":"2026-04-12T04:10:14","date_gmt":"2026-04-12T04:10:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/394207\/"},"modified":"2026-04-12T04:10:14","modified_gmt":"2026-04-12T04:10:14","slug":"people-will-die-unless-fuel-protests-end-urgently-fuels-for-ireland-ceo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/394207\/","title":{"rendered":"People will die unless fuel protests end urgently \u2014 Fuels for Ireland CEO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>People will die unless <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/maintopics\/fuel-prices_topic-5329865.html\">fuel protests<\/a> end urgently, Kevin McPartlan, CEO of Fuels for Ireland told the  Irish Examiner on Saturday evening.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the partial reopening of Whitegate oil refinery, the fuel situation across the country continues to deteriorate, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Approximately 1,000 of the country&#8217;s 1,600 service stations may be empty tonight, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIf everything went back to normal tonight, we\u2019re still 10 days away from having normal supply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe\u2019ll still have 10 days of forecourts with no or limited supply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cTomorrow that will be worse again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cBy Monday evening, we will not be able to guarantee fuel anywhere in the country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The restrictions on fuel are now down to &#8220;a failure of policing&#8221;, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe\u2019re a coupe of days from garda cars not having fuel,&#8221; Mr McPartlan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n            People are going to die because ambulances cant get to them. It could have happened already.\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The first 12 vehicles to refuel at a service station in Limericks city after it was restocked recently were ambulances, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">And panic buying is compounding the problem across the country.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/5037191_11_articleinline_Fuel_20for_20ire_20ceo_2033.jpg\" alt=\"Fuels for Ireland CEO Kevin McPartlan. Picture: Sam Boal\/Collins Photos <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Seven fuel trucks have now left Whitegate oil refinery with another 10 approximately due to leave shortly, Mr McPartlan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">After that, fuel trucks \u201cin the single digits\u201d will leave the east Cork oil refinery tonight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">This will mean that approximately 20 fuel trucks will have left Whitegate today. That number is usually nearer to 200 daily, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cAnd Foynes and Galway [terminals] are still locked down,&#8221; Mr McPartlan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWhere we usually have about 800 [fuel] trucks [delivering] a day, we today probably have about 220, including the ones from Whitegate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe\u2019re not stopping the crisis, we\u2019re slowing it down very marginally. What we actually need is the garda\u00ed to step up and ensure that there can be complete, unhindered access to Whitegate, Foynes and Galway. And once the trucks have got out of those facilities, that they can move on roads unhindered as well.\u201d Slow moving fuel protest convoys across the country are having \u201ca huge\u201d impact on the fuel supply, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;It&#8217;s no good just getting trucks out, we have to make sure they can get where they&#8217;re trying to go.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;But we see on social media protestors talking about how to block or slow traffic at key junctions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Only about half of the normal fuel deliveries from Dublin port is getting through due to traffic restrictions. Fuel deliveries through the port supply approximately half of the country\u2019s fuel. We need to appeal to people to have some patience while we catch up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n            People see a few trucks leave Whitegate and think this is over. It\u2019s not. Picture: Larry Cummins<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cPeople realise you can get fuel there and rush to panic buy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Irelands south and the west coast are still the worst affected areas. But a contagion caused by panic buying has now led to fuel shortages across the country, especially in Leinster, Mr McPartlan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The State&#8217;s response has been &#8220;lackadaisical&#8221;, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;It\u2019s insane that garda\u00ed have not gotten control of this situation,&#8221; Mr McPartlan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu caption\">Garda Commissioner: Blockades &#8216;not legitimate form of protest<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly said in a statement this evening that garda\u00ed have worked hard since Tuesday &#8220;to minimise disruption caused to the citizens of the country&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;Despite this, some people have decided to escalate an already difficult situation by blockading critical national infrastructure such as fuel depots and refineries.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/5037218_5_articleinline_acd31ed7-7027-47a3-bd5f-8552e388f626.jpg\" alt=\"Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly speaking to the media at Garda Headquarters om Dublin on Saturday. Cillian Sherlock\/PA Wire<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;This has resulted in fuel shortages that are directly impacting on emergency services such as hospitals, the ambulance service, and the fire service, as well as businesses and the general public,&#8221; Mr Kelly said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;These are blockades.
