The Garda Public Order Unit has begun an operation at a protest over high fuel costs on Dublin’s O’Connell Street.<\/p>\n
Just before 4am, O’Connell Bridge and O’Connell Street were closed to the public as public order personnel began to move down the street, asking member’s of the public and protestors to leave the area.<\/p>\n
Several garda vans and the Mounted Unit are stationed at the junction of O’Connell Bridge and O’Connell Street.<\/p>\n
More than a dozen Public Order Unit vans have also driven onto the street.<\/p>\n

The blockade at Galway Port, which began on Tuesday, is also continuing.<\/p>\n
There is a significant garda presence in the area too, including the Public Order Unit.<\/p>\n
Last night, the Jack Lynch Tunnel in Co Cork was partially blocked by fuel protestors.<\/p>\n
The tunnel is now fully reopened after around 10 tractors stopped inside the northbound bore, reducing it to one lane.<\/p>\n
It comes ahead of a Cabinet meeting this evening to discuss supports for hauliers, farmers and the fishing sector.<\/p>\n
Ministers will also be updated on the security situation at some of the State’s key infrastructure as garda\u00ed move to what was termed an enforcement phase around the protests.<\/p>\n
Cabinet meetings on Sunday are rare and almost always happen at a time of crisis.<\/p>\n
Today is no different as the Government seeks to take the temperature down a good few notches after days of protests that reached far into the workings of the economy.<\/p>\n
Direct support for hauliers along the lines of what was in place during Covid-19 pandemic could be signed off by Cabinet this evening.<\/p>\n
An extension of the diesel rebate scheme beyond June is also seen as likely.<\/p>\n
There are expected to be measures for farmers and the fishing sector too, particularly in the area of credit lines and cash flow.<\/p>\n
