{"id":394484,"date":"2026-04-12T08:59:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-12T08:59:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/394484\/"},"modified":"2026-04-12T08:59:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-12T08:59:08","slug":"bank-of-ireland-reveals-home-insurance-pitfalls-to-avoid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/394484\/","title":{"rendered":"Bank of Ireland reveals home insurance pitfalls to avoid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Home insurance customers could potentially be left at a loss if they underinsure their homes, new research from <a href=\"http:\/\/bankofireland.com\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"bankofireland.com\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Bank of Ireland<\/a> shows.<\/p>\n<p>Almost a third (31%) of homeowners researched have upgraded their homes in the past three years, including insulation and <a href=\"https:\/\/businessplus.ie\/tag\/solar-panels\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"5663\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">solar panel<\/a> installation, highlighting growing customer focus on energy efficiency and BER ratings. <\/p>\n<p>Despite the prevalence of home upgrades however, 61% of those who made improvements didn\u2019t notify their insurers, leaving them at potential risk of being underinsured or missing out on potential savings on their premium.<\/p>\n<p>The research also indicates that almost a quarter (24%) of homeowners don\u2019t understand the concept of underinsurance, where the sums insured on a policy are at an amount that is less than the value it will cost to reinstate, repair or replace them.<\/p>\n<p>With the rising prevalence of severe weather events in recent years, 52% of homeowners across Ireland now state storm damage as one of their top three fears in relation to their homes.<\/p>\n<p>Just four in ten customers (40%) are reviewing their terms in detail before renewing, and almost half (48%) admit to renewing once the price meets their expectations. <\/p>\n<p>Niall Moran, head of sales at Bank of Ireland Insurance Services, said:\u00a0\u201cMany customers are investing in upgrades such as heating systems, energy efficiency improvements and security features, but too often these changes aren\u2019t reflected in their policies \u2013 meaning some are missing out on potential cost savings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur message is simple: always review your policy before you renew. Check your sums insured, declare any upgrades and ensure your cover reflects the true value of your home and contents. We are committed to providing clear guidance and practical support to help customers protect their homes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt Bank of Ireland we provide up to 20% off insurance premiums for Ecosaver Mortgage customers who are making sustainable improvements to their homes \u2013 so you\u2019re improving the environment and saving money at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bank of Ireland is encouraging customers to review their insurance policies carefully before renewing, to ensure their policy accurately reflects the requirements of their home and its contents.<\/p>\n<p>Jewellery is called out predominantly as the most cherished item in respondents\u2019 homes, with jewellery, computer technology, furniture and mobile phones the top four items homeowners are most concerned about losing or damaging.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"650\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/bank-of-ireland.jpg\" alt=\"Home Insurance\" class=\"wp-image-200314\"  \/>Six in ten homeowners who\u2019ve upgraded their property didn\u2019t notify their insurer, potentially leaving themselves at risk of being underinsured..
