The owner of a discount warehouse shop opened in Cork six months ago plans to roll out the concept thanks to its booming success.<\/p>\n
Kieran Cuddihy opened Bulk Buy, a discount shop in Ballincollig Commercial Park on the town\u2019s Link Rd in September, offering branded retail goods to shoppers at discounted prices, sometimes in larger sizes or quantities.<\/p>\n
The produce on the shop floor changes from week to week, says Mr Cuddihy.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur initial concept was to have 200 lines on the shop floor at all times. That\u2019s now gone up to 2,000 lines,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have contacts in wholesale who might need to move a product or a certain pack size. We sell anything we come across of value that we can pass on to end users and still make a margin.\u201d<\/p>\n
There\u2019s no minimum price and it\u2019s aimed at the public, but Bulk Buy is attracting custom from smaller businesses such as cafes and hairdressers.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur intention was to open Monday to Friday, but we\u2019ve had to go to seven days a week \u2014 it\u2019s a good complaint,\u201d said Mr Cuddihy.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a concept that\u2019s very big in England, and we have a lot of things like branded confectionery, minerals, ready meals, and ambient products which people are buying for occasions like confirmations and communions.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have core lines every week, but others may just be there for a month.<\/p>\n
\u201cI know it\u2019s an expensive time for everyone, so if people can save \u20ac40 to \u20ac60 on a week\u2019s shop, that\u2019s the name of the game.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Cuddihy hopes to replicate the success at the store in Ballincollig in other places.<\/p>\n
\u201cLocation is key. Once we can find the right place, we will roll more out \u2014 there is a real opening for it.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Cuddihy family has extensive experience in retail, running retails shops in Cork.<\/p>\n
Cuddihys operates in Cloughduv and opened three weeks ago in Rochestown.<\/p>\n
The Cuddihys Daybreak in Ovens has traded successfully for more than a decade but is closing on Sunday, April 19, \u201cdue to circumstances beyond our control\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve been in Ovens for 10 years and have built up a great business, but unfortunately we\u2019re not getting another lease from the landlord there.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Ovens business also operates fuel pumps, and Mr Cuddihy recognises the challenges and concerns of consumers.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were selling on a commission basis; you\u2019re working on a commission of about 2c a litre and it\u2019s competitive to sell the volume.<\/p>\n
