Combating\u00a0the opioid crisis\u00a0relies on\u00a0identifying\u00a0new\u00a0prevention strategies\u00a0for\u00a0problematic fentanyl use.\u00a0In a collaboration between Washington State University and Washington University in St. Louis, researchers led by Jose Moron\u00a0tested whether\u00a0enriching\u00a0a rat’s\u00a0environment can\u00a0reduce fentanyl use and relapse.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The researchers housed rats individually in either standard conditions or\u00a0environments with new objects\u00a0and measured fentanyl use across stages modeling human addiction: ongoing use, quitting, and relapse triggered by stress.\u00a0Environmental enrichment reduced fentanyl intake over time and helped animals stop seeking the drug\u00a0faster.\u00a0Notably, when exposed to a\u00a0stressful trigger, rats in enriched environments showed a much weaker\u00a0relapse\u00a0response\u00a0compared to those in standard conditions.\u00a0Rats in enriched environments also had lower levels of stress hormones, which were linked to\u00a0relapse\u00a0in those with standard conditions.\u00a0<\/p>\n
According to the researchers, their work suggests that\u00a0supplying\u00a0rats with new objects in\u00a0nonsocial\u00a0environments can protect against fentanyl use\u00a0and\u00a0relapse.\u00a0Says Jose Moron-Concepcion, “Because these strategies do not rely on social interaction, they may be easier to implement in real-world settings, including treatment programs and recovery environments. More broadly, this work highlights the powerful role of the environment and stress in addiction. Enrichment-based approaches could complement existing treatments and offer a scalable way to reduce opioid use and relapse\u00a0risk.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
