{"id":396952,"date":"2026-04-13T22:48:26","date_gmt":"2026-04-13T22:48:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/396952\/"},"modified":"2026-04-13T22:48:26","modified_gmt":"2026-04-13T22:48:26","slug":"more-retrofitting-is-answer-to-energy-crisis-labour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/396952\/","title":{"rendered":"More retrofitting is answer to energy crisis &#8211; Labour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More retrofitting is needed to mitigate the impact of future fuel crises, the Labour Party has argued.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, the Government announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newstalk.com\/news\/what-is-the-way-forward-after-the-fuel-protests-2252471\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u20ac500 million package of measures to cut the cost of living<\/a>, which includes a reduction in excise duty and a delay to a looming increase in the carbon tax.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newstalk.com\/shows\/the-claire-byrne-show-2228535\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Claire Byrne Show<\/a>, Labour\u2019s Ged Nash said energy insecurity in Ireland was the result of the Government\u2019s \u201cshort-term thinking\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He urged the Government to double down on retrofitting, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newstalk.com\/news\/seai-window-and-door-grants-2229505\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">which Budget 2026 allocated \u20ac558 million to<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we had been better at organising retrofitting and ensuring that we could address the real energy problems that households and businesses across the country are facing, then we may not be in this situation,\u201d he argued.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re so dependent on imported oil and the volatility that is going to be experienced into the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook at what&#8217;s happening in the Strait of Hormuz this morning.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1398719\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/insulation.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\"\/> A man retrofitting a home with loft insulation. Picture by: Alamy.com.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Louth TD added that the measures announced yesterday by the Government \u201cjust simply don&#8217;t cut it for ordinary working people\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re extremely concerned that the way this was managed by Government last week, ultimately, in the end, the authorities managed to clear O&#8217;Connell Street, Ireland&#8217;s main street, and managed to clear the blockades,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the response from Government really was cack-handed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Nash continued that the Government\u2019s authority has \u201cdrained away\u201d in recent days and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newstalk.com\/news\/fuel-protest-6-2252539\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Labour will &#8220;absolutely\u201d support Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s motion of no confidence<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to see this motion in the first place,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will make amendments to it ourselves, to make the key points that we believe need to be made on behalf of working people in this country, who are really burdened at the moment in terms of high energy costs, high education costs, high childcare costs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was nothing in this package yesterday for the working people who are keeping the country going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Main image: A man retrofitting a home with solar panels.
