Slipknot<\/a> fans have been sharing their reactions to \u2018Look Outside Your Window\u2019<\/a>, after receiving the lost album early ahead of its release on Record Store Day<\/a> 2026.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0experimental, \u201cRadiohead vibe\u201d album<\/a> is arriving on vinyl on Saturday (April 18) as part of this year\u2019s edition of RSD<\/a>, and is limited to 2,300 copies.<\/p>\n

It comes after percussionist Clown (real name Shawn Crahan) told fans late last year to \u201chave faith\u201d that \u201c2026 is the year\u201d<\/a> it would arrive. The LP, which was recorded in 2008, has repeatedly been delayed since details of it were revealed around 2019.<\/p>\n

Now, a fan on Reddit<\/a> has claimed to have got their hands on a copy of \u2018Look Outside Your Window\u2019 already. They said a local indie vinyl shop in Canada had the special edition of the album in stock a week early.<\/p>\n

The user posted an image of the vinyl and said they were \u201creally surprised\u201d by the music on the record. \u201cThe songs are better than I thought! If you have some questions, I\u2019ll try to answer them,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n

Naturally, fans in the comments section were keen to find out more about the LP. Before answering the many questions put to them, the author of the post shared some notes after their first listen-through<\/p>\n

They revealed that Cristina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil makes several appearances on the \u2018Look Outside Your Window\u2019, including on the songs \u2018Christina\u2019 (which they described as a \u201cmonologue\u201d) and \u2018Real\u2019.<\/p>\n

The fan also revealed that there are guitar solos in some of the tracks, there are screams at the end of \u2018Moth\u2019, and they felt that the cut \u2018Real\u2019 was sonically similar to Slipknot\u2019s 2014 album, \u2018.5: The Gray Chapter\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Later, they said they \u201clike it a lot\u201d after their third listen. \u201cJust don\u2019t expect metal songs,\u201d they added. When asked if it was \u201cvery electronic or anything\u201d, they replied: \u201cNot very electronic no. Hard to name a band with the same sound, but the vibe is definitely Slipknot except no screams, no double bass drum.\u201d<\/p>\n

The listener wrote: \u201cIf you like [2004\u2019s \u2018Circle\u2019 and 2022\u2019s \u2018Adderall\u2019], you will like the album (also \u2018Prelude 3.0\u2019), but they don\u2019t have the same \u2018metal tones\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

Someone else queried about \u201cthe Radiohead<\/a> comparison that\u2019s been mentioned just about every time this is brought up\u201d, to which the author of the post responded: \u201cSome elements here and there, but overall not that much. The first thing that I thought was that most of these songs would really fit on [2004 album] \u2018Vol.3 The Subliminal Verses\u2019. They have the same vibe.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another user asked about the previous references to Pink Floyd<\/a>. \u201cI could see the Pink Floyd comparison actually!\u201d the listener wrote back. \u201cThey have the same \u2018slowness\u2019.\u201d They also shared that there was \u201cnothing heavy\u201d on the LP.<\/p>\n

As for standout moments on the album, they said: \u201c\u2018Moth\u2019, \u2018Dirge\u2019, \u2018Toad\u2019 and my favourite is \u2018Juliette\u2019. But they are all a lot better than I thought they would be! \u201911th March\u2019 is like a long intro, really slow and \u2018U Can\u2019t Stop This\u2019 is an outro (shortest song I believe).\u201d<\/p>\n

Elsewhere in the Reddit thread, a fan praised the \u201cgorgeous pressing\u201d of \u2018Look Outside Your Window\u2019.<\/p>\n

A user also asked: \u201cDo you hear anything that has been used later on in Slipknot?\u201d The listener replied: \u201cI didn\u2019t hear any reused riffs, but I haven\u2019t listened to the last two albums much.\u201d<\/p>\n

On X\/Twitter, another fan said they had bought \u2018Look Outside Your Window\u2019 early, too. \u201cYou definitely can\u2019t say it\u2019s Slipknot, and yeah it\u2019s experimental but there\u2019s no \u2018Radiohead vibe\u2019 like Corey [Taylor]<\/a> said,\u201d they shared.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is interesting, though, is how far removed it is from everything they\u2019ve done over so many years, both as a band and separately. If it weren\u2019t for Taylor\u2019s voice, you could say it\u2019s another band altogether.<\/p>\n

The fan concluded: \u201cBut beyond that, it\u2019s INTERESTING and so far one of the best of the year. I hope it makes it to the Grammys<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Someone else posted a track-by-track guide on Reddit<\/a> after their first listen, and summarised: \u201cDoes it sound like Radiohead? Not in the slightest, to be honest. It goes a bit shoegazey, and with Deftones<\/a> on a monstrous resurgence right now, I wonder if that prompted the album\u2019s release.<\/p>\n

\u201cDoes it sound like Slipknot? If we try to disassociate from Corey\u2019s unmistakable vocals, it\u2019s clearly not a Slipknot album. In places it skirts a little close to \u2018weird\u2019 Slipknot (\u2018My Pain\u2019, \u2018XIX\u2019, \u2018If Rain Is What You Want\u2019) but it\u2019s good that they were clearly trying to do something different, because any time it does border on Slipknot, it\u2019s obvious that half the band aren\u2019t there.<\/p>\n

Jim [Root, guitarist] is on fire here. His versatility runs throughout, to the point that I\u2019d consider this to be his record, tbh. As you can probably gather, I\u2019m not a fan of Crahan having an elevated stake in the decision making\u2026 and an actual drummer would have elevated this record quite a bit (it\u2019s the big thing lacking here).\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking about finally releasing the long-awaited project for Record Store Day, Slipknot said in a recent statement: \u201cWe knew we were heading down a different creative path, entirely apart from Slipknot, and we followed it eagerly. We called the project \u2018Look Outside Your Window\u2019 as a tribute to this experimental spirit.<\/p>\n

\u201cCreated during a chaotic time in our shared history, the songs were born late at night, in a house on a farm in the middle of nowhere,\u201d they continued. \u201cPeering out through a big picture window, we wondered about what, or who, might be lurking outside. That sense of the unknown seeped into the music itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

They added: \u201cThere were no rules; ideas could come from anywhere: subtle drum loops, bits of organ or abstract guitar noise, even samples of frogs or crickets. Guided by emotion and instinct, we let the sounds themselves point the way.\u201d<\/p>\n

The album was recorded 18 years ago by Clown, Taylor, Sid Wilson and Root as they simultaneously made 2008\u2019s \u2018All Hope Is Gone\u2019. However, only one song from those sessions has been released so far \u2013 \u2018All Hope Is Gone\u2019 bonus track \u2018Til We Die\u2019.<\/p>\n

Frontman Taylor confirmed the existence of the album in 2019<\/a>, telling\u00a0SiriusXM\u00a0that the record contained \u201csome of my best writing\u201d and \u201csome of my best singing\u201d. Clown then told NME the following year that the band almost dropped it over Christmas 2019<\/a>, but ultimately decided against it, so as not to interfere with the release of \u2018We Are Not Your Kind\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n

After Clown suggested that\u00a0the album might drop in 2023<\/a>, Taylor\u00a0gave a further update to\u00a0NME\u00a0that summer<\/a>, telling us that he was partially responsible for the LP\u2019s delays.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was talking to Clown about it the other day and he goes, \u2018One of the reasons it hasn\u2019t come out is because you keep putting shit out which keeps conflicting with when I want to release it!\u2019,\u201d Taylor explained. \u201cI was like, \u2018Fuck dude, why didn\u2019t you tell me?\u2019 He says, \u2018Fuck, Taylor \u2013 you just got too much shit!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

But after Clown told NME that \u2018Look Outside Your Window\u2019 would \u201cdefinitely\u201d arrive in 2024<\/a>, and\u00a0that the project was mixed and mastered, it ultimately failed to materialise. He\u2019d told us: \u201cIt\u2019s such a great album. Corey is my favourite singer ever, and you\u2019ll never hear him sing in the same way as on this album, so it\u2019s been worth holding it back. It\u2019s such a different, timeless project.\u201d<\/p>\n

Clown explained in late 2024\u00a0that the band were still tweaking \u201ctons of incomplete concepts\u201d<\/a>, while Root joked that he often threatened to leak the record<\/a>.<\/p>\n

At the end of 2024,\u00a0Clown told NME that \u201cmanagement has [the album] and it\u2019s coming out\u201d, hinting<\/a>: \u201cWhat I can tell you is that I showed Corey the final artwork two days ago. It is happening, but unfortunately, because of Christmas and New Year and the way business works, I can\u2019t slide it in this year.\u201d He said early the following year: \u201cIt\u2019s not Slipknot at all, not even close.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

Last autumn, Slipknot drummer Eloy Casagrande revealed that the band were working on new music<\/a>. \u201cWe are cooking,\u201d he said at the time. \u201cSince I joined the band, we have been working on some new ideas. We keep exchanging guitar riffs, drum beats, so we are always doing something. We had also some jam sessions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Record Store Day\u2019s 2026 slate also includes special releases from Blur<\/a>, Charli XCX<\/a>,\u00a0Muse<\/a>,\u00a0Suede<\/a>,\u00a0David Bowie<\/a>,\u00a0The Cure<\/a>,\u00a0KPop Demon Hunters<\/a>,\u00a0Paramore<\/a> and many more.<\/p>\n

Organisers have also announced new pressings from Fleetwood Mac<\/a>,\u00a0Primal Scream<\/a>,\u00a0Bring Me The Horizon and Sigrid<\/a>,\u00a0Divorce<\/a>, and\u00a0Kaiser Chiefs<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0a run of vinyl in support of War Child<\/a>.<\/p>\n
