After beginning production in Belfast, Ireland, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms<\/a> season 2 has moved to Gran Canaria, Spain<\/a> in order to better capture the barren landscapes to portray the drought in the story. However, filming has been forced to relocate due to historic rainfall in the area \u2014 reaching levels that Gran Canaria has not seen in the last 15 years. <\/p>\n

In A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2, Dunk enters the service of elderly\u00a0Ser Eustace Osgrey (Peter Mullan)<\/a>\u00a0in the drought-stricken Reach, where they find themselves caught in the middle of his political land disputes with\u00a0Lady Rohanne Webber (Lucy Boynton)<\/a>, which gets increasingly heated. The drought \u2014 which causes “bare brown hills and fields of dead and dying grain” \u2014 is key to the story, highlighting that even summer in Westeros<\/a> can be as deadly as winter.<\/p>\n

Spain is a location that Game of Thrones utilized a lot to depict southern Westeros, especially from season 5 onwards. However, the main show preferred to film in Andalucia on the mainland rather than the Canary Islands.<\/p>\n

Moving to Gran Canaria was essential in order to capture the barren scenery, serving as a better depiction for the drought in the Reach that occurs in AKOTSK season 2. And now the production has arrived and it has flooded, the irony is absolutely not lost on us. The first reports of the flooding came from Spanish news site Ataltico Hoy<\/a>, and while they may have mistakenly reported that the flooding occurred on the set of House of the Dragon<\/a>, we know for a fact that it is HBO’s other Thrones spinoff, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which was scheduled to film in Spain during this time<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The report notes that the reservoir Presa de las Ni\u00f1as\u00a0reached levels that have not been seen in 15 years. What’s more, severe flooding has left part of the structures built for filming under water, making it impossible to use the space.<\/p>\n

Thankfully, though the Gran Canaria set has been flooded by copious rainfall, the set has moved to the much drier Peninsula. Filming in Spain was expected to run until around midway through May 2026. It’s unclear how much of a delay the emergency move of sets will have on production. <\/p>\n

On a serious note, we hope that the flooding has not caused too much damage that that everyone remains safe.<\/p>\n

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 is expected to air sometime in 2027. In the meantime, season 1 is currently streaming at HBO Max. Up next in the Game of Thrones<\/a> universe is House of the Dragon season 3, coming this summer.<\/p>\n
